The IWF Mourns the Passing of Maître François Carrard

With the passing of Maître François Carrard, the IWF has lost a trustful advisor and a great friend. His contribution to sport in general and to weightlifting in particular is without parallel. Throughout his exceptional career, Maître Carrard brought to bear his legal training, his constant willingness to help resolve even the trickiest situations and his deeply amiable personality. It was a winning combination. Maître François Carrard @ASA Profiles As the IOC’s long-time Director General, Maître Carrard provided much-needed leadership and rigour while the Olympic Movement transitioned from largely voluntary administration to a professional basis. He was instrumental in reforms at the IOC, in the creation of WADA, the creation of CAS and so much more. Weightlifting was one of the many sports lucky enough to been able to count on his steadfast support. “Throughout the IWF’s efforts to reform our governance, we were so fortunate to have been able to count on the support of Maître Carrard. All those of us who had the real pleasure of working with him shall miss him dearly,” said IWF Interim President Dr Michael Irani. “Francois could always be relied on to give the right advice, in the right way. We are deeply saddened that he will no longer be by our side.” The IWF extends its very deepest condolences to the family and colleagues of Maître

Commonwealth Championships Women +87kg Podium @IWF/Steve Galvan Men +109kg Category Every time there is competition with Lasha among the athletes you can expect something great. This time was no different at the 2021 IWF World Championships as Lasha broke all his records once again. Earlier in the day in Group B, Enzo Kuworge (NED), this years Junior World Champion and Tokyo 2020 Olympian, on his last C&J attempt tried to beat the Junior C&J World Record, but was unsuccessful in his attempt. However he was not the only one who competed among the seniors as a junior. Alireza Yousefi (IRI) also tried to beat the Junior C&J World Record, and with his second attempt of 238kg he succeded in it. In Snatch Lasha already made his statement when with his last lift of 225kg broke his previous record of 223kg and won the Gold medal. Varazdat Lalayan from Armenia took Silver with 211kg and Eduard Ziaziulin (BLR) claimed the Bronze medal with 206kg.  In Clean&Jerk the Bronze medal went to Gor Minasyan (ARM) with 243kg and Silver went to his teammate Varazdat Lalayan with 246kg. When all other athletes completed their lifts, Lasha just begin to start. He lifted 247kg on his first attempt, and with that he ensured the first place was his in C&J. But then came his 2 other lifts. He added 10kg extra to his second lift which he lifted impressively and set his last lift at 267kg which was a new World Record attempt. He completed his lift but the referees by decision declared it a 'no lift'. However the jury reviewed his lift and after the video replay they reversed the decision of the referees therefore with his last lift he set the new World Record of C&J at 267kg. Of course as in Snatch and C&J, Lasha Talakhadze won the Total Gold with the World Record of 492kg. Uzbek Victory and Historical Gold for Norway- Day 10 at the 2021 IWF World Championships and Commonwealth Championships

The 10th day here in Tashkent featured the Men 109kg and Women 87kg categories. Men 109kg Category We experienced the first full house as the Men 109kg featured Akbar Djuraev, Tokyo 2020 Gold medallist and Ruslan Nurudinov, current World Record Holder in C&J in the category. Next to them Simon Martirosyan (ARM) Tokyo 2020 Silver medallist was also in the group and had the same chance at winning the competititon. It was clear from the beginning that these 3 athletes will be contenders for the medals, only the order was a question. In Snatch. from the 3 athletes, Ruslan Nurudinov started at 185kg but he could only lift it during his second attempt. As this was his only successful lift he won Bronze. The Gold was decided by the Tokyo 2020 Gold and Silver medallists Akbar Djuraev and Simon Martirosyan (ARM). Djuraev started earlier at 187kg which he lifted successfully and Martirosyan also made a first good lift of 188kg. However as Martirosyan didn't make a further successful lift, the Tokyo results were repated. Martirosyan won Silver with 188kg and Djuraev who went 3 from 3 and won with 195kg. In Clean and Jerk, the three Snatch medallist all started within 2kgs differences between each other and all made a first 'good lift'. The same happened with Martirosyan as in Snatch, after his first lift he could not manage another one so he won Bronze with 228kg. After that, it was all about the two Uzbeks. Both of them made successful lift on their second attempt (Djuraev - 232kg, Nurudinov-236kg) so it was up to their last lift to decide who will win. First came Djuraev with 238kg which he lifted successfully. Then Nurudinov and his team decided to put his last lift at 242kg which would have meant he would break his own world record. He almost made it but at the end it was a 'no lift'. Therefore Djuraev won Gold and Silver went to Nurudinov. In Total the same order was upheld. Akbar Djuraev won with 433kg, Ruslan Nurudinov clinched Silver with 421kg and Simon Martirosyan finished the podium with 416kg. Akbar Djuraev (UZB) @IWF/Steve Galvan Commonwealth Championships We saw the first Gold medal for Cameroon at the 2021 Commonwealth Championships when Junior Periclex Ngadja Nyabeyeu won with 360kg in Total. Silver went to Singh Lovepreet from India with 348kg and Jackson George Roberts-Young from Australia completed the podium with 337kg. Commonwealth Championships Men 109kg Podium @IWF/Steve Galvan Women 87kg Category In Snatch Schott Amanda Da Costa from Brazil won the Bronze medal at her first World Championships with her second attempt of 106kg. Tokyo 2020 Olympian Ankhtsetseg Munkhjantsan (MGL) who placed 4th at the Olympics won Silver with her only successful attempt of 109kg. The Uzbeks could continue their celebration as Tursunoy Jabborova won Gold with 113kg which she lifted on her last attempt.   In C&J we experienced a historical Gold medal for Norway. Solfrid Koanda won Gold with her second lift of 141kg at her first World Championships. Silver went to Ankhtsetseg Munkhjantsan (MGL) with the same weight as Koanda only she did lift it on a later attempt. RWF athlete Dariia Akhmerova completed the podium with 135kg. In Total Ankhtsetseg Munkhjantsan (MGL) won with 250kg, Tursunoy Jabborova (UZB) placed second with 244kg and Solfrid Koanda (NOR) finished at third place with the same Total as Jabborova.
