Meeting with the Turkish media

The IWF Executive Board Members interrupted their meeting to join a press conference organised by the Turkish Weightlifting Federation. The friendly meeting was highlighted by the presence of Halil Mutlu and Naim Suleimanoglu, both 3 times Olympic Champions. Addressing the Turkish media, IWF President Dr. Tamás Aján thanked the Turkish Weightlifting Federation and its President Dr. Hasan Akkus for hosting the IWF World Anti-Doping

Executive Board Meeting in Istanbul

The IWF Executive Board started its 2 days meeting on 15 March in Istanbul, Turkey. On the Agenda among many important topics, the following topics were discussed: working plan of the Committees, the Anti-Doping status of the IWF, the upcoming World Championships, IWF Development Program

Training and Referees course in Mauritius

In the framework of the IWF Development Program, a coaching and referees course was held in Mauritius on 22-28 Feb 2011, previous to the preparation period for the Indian Islands Ocean Games. Coaches and referees from the following countries participated at the course:Mauritius : 7 ParticipantsSeychelles : 3 ParticipantsMadagascar : 2 ParticipantsComoros Islands: 1 ParticipantSouth Africa: 1 ParticipantThe coaches and referees had the opportunity to familiarize with the latest training methods, a very useful scientific approach, the role of coaches, characteristics of children and most of all the pedagogy of coaching. Training and various periodizations were discussed in detail, to enable the coaches to better prepare the lifters of all ages in the best way. Referees had the chance to be fully versed with the rule book and also huge emphasis was placed on the correct adjudicating of lifts rather than interpretation of the lifts which can be at times conflicting. At the end of the session, a small test of comprehension was conducted and discussed which all participants passed successfully.Development Director of Africa and lecturer of the course, Mr. Avenash Pandoo met with the Minister of Youth and Sport, Hon. Satyaprakash (Devanand) Ritoo, and spoke about Mauritius involvement in Weightlifting on the Continent. The President of Mauritius Weightlifting Mr. Nundkishor Fakun thanked for the hard work and enthusiasm for organising the course on short notice. Last but not least, the IWF and the WFA were appreciated for their continued support in developing the sport and making the funds possible to make this course a success.

IWF expresses sympathy with Japan’s national tragedy

The Weightlifting Family is shocked by the tragedy hitting Japan and in a letter sent by the IWF President to the Japanese Weightlifting Association it expresses its deepest sympathy with the Japanese

Mohamed Yousef Al Mana is the new AWF President

The AWF Congress in Tashkent continued on 10 March 2011 with the elections.Mr. Mohamed Yousef Al Mana (QAT) was elected President of the Asian Weightlifting Federation by acclamation, after the withdrawal of all the other candidates. Ali Moradi (IRI) was elected General Secretary with 31 votes against Tom Liaw (SIN) and after the withdrawal of Niwat Limsuknirun (THA) and Mohammad Hasan Jaloud (IRQ).
