Last farewell to Waldemar Baszanowski

Poland’s sporting hero and one of the All-Time Greatest in Weightlifting, double Olympic champion Waldemar Baszanowski who died at the age of 75, received the last farewell in a requiem mass in Warsaw on 9th May 2011. Hundreds of friends, followers, colleagues and admirers, officials and weightlifters turned out for his funeral. The IWF and EWF were represented and obituaries, detailing Baszanowski’s exceptional career and human qualities were heard from the Minister of Sport, the President of the Polish Olympic Committee, the IWF, the EWF and the Polish Weightlifting Federation. Poland’s highest decoration was conferred on him posthumously by the President of the Chancellary. According to his wish, Baszanowski’s ashes were laid to rest in a family grave in Warsaw.
