Weightlifting coaching course concludes in Pakistan

The Pakistan Weightlifting Federation in collaboration with the IOC Olympic Solidarity and the POA organised a coaching course at the Punjab University Ground Weightlifting centre from February 8 to 16.Qaiser Iftikhar, a diploma holder in weightlifting coaching from Semmelweis University Budapest, Hungary, was the course director. Prof M. Azhar and Prof Khizer Hayat also delivered lectures.The following participants successfully attended this programme: Anjum Rohail Butt, Muhammad Rizwan, Kashif Barkat, Abdul Jabar Adnan, Aqeel Javed Butt, Muhammad Shafeeq, Rashid Mahmood, Abdul Ghafoor, Adeeb Akram, Muhammad Anjad Amin, Ali Imran Butt, Abdul Khaliq, Ashfaq Ahmad, Muhammad Ashfaq, Muhammad Ali, Zubair Yousaf Butt, Aleem Dar, Muhammad Sabir, Allah Rakha. This is the second episode of coaching courses being organized for the development of the National Sports Structure in weightlifting. The first course of this kind was organized in Karachi in November

Kumaritashvili’s body arrives in Georgia

The body of Nodar Kumaritashvili, the luger who was killed in an horrific training accident at the Winter Olympics, arrived in Georgia for an emotional homecoming. Draped in a Georgian flag, Kumaritashvili's coffin was carried through an honour guard of young athletes after arriving in the early morning hours at Tbilisi airport and was presented to his family. Before Kumaritashvili's coffin was loaded into a hearse for the 180-kilometre journey to his hometown of Bakuriani, where officials said his funeral would take place on Saturday. "His death is a great loss, not only for Georgia but for the whole world of sports," said one of the mourners, former Olympic weightlifting gold medallist Giorgi Asanidze. "Nodar deserves every possible tribute for his heroic sacrifice," said Asanidze, who is also a member of Georgia's parliament.

Inspection visit at Paris 2011 reveals advanced stage of preparations

Anikó Németh-Móra, IWF Director and Attila Ádámfi, IWF Competition Director made a technical inspection visit over the weekend in Paris, to co-ordinate the organisation of the 2011 Olympic Qualification World Championships. The visit and the discussions embraced the cheking of accommodation, competition venue, training, meals, technical organisation, regulation, transport, etc. - all important aspects of the Championships. Already now, 20 months prior to the event, an Organising Committee is in place and in full operation, under the care of FFHMFAC President Jean-Paul Bulgaridhes and professional experts appointed or employed in key positions. The IWF officials stated that the preparations were in an advanced stage and the French hosts are aspiring at staging the world championships to full satisfaction of the participants.
