Continental statistics

With less than 1 year to go to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, results reached at weightlifting calendar events and especially Continental competitions can bring us some interesting statistics. The 5 Continental Championships / Games held in 2015 were as follows: European Championships Tbilisi, GEO Oceanian Championships Port Moresby, PNG Pan-American Games Toronto, CAN Asian Championships Phuket, THA African Games Brazzaville, CGO The first statistical chart compiles the points given to the best 6 Total places from each continent by bodyweight categories. Making a theoretical attribution of points, the second chart is a potential ranking allowing the countries to have an insight in what their current results worth on a continental level. The third chart presents the potential ranking by countries following the same structure. On 16 September 2015, the World Anti-Doping Agency’s Executive Committee approved the 2016 List of Prohibited Substances and Methods, which will come into force on 1 January 2016. You may find the new list here The IWF Anti-Doping Commission would like to specifically call everyone’s attention to a new prohibited substance called MILDRONATE (Meldonium) which was in the WADA Monitoring Program in 2015 and will be prohibited from the 1st January 2016. The most used trade names for the substance are: mildronate, meldonium, Quaterin, Kvaretin, THP. Please note that this is not an exhaustive list. There may be other medications, supplements which could contain mildronate (labelled or not labelled). According to recent scientific publications of the WADA accredited laboratories Cologne and Moscow, 2-17 % of doping control samples collected in 2014 and 2015 contained mildronate. The IWF ADC strongly advise everyone to carefully review the new list and comply

6 strong candidates for the 2018 IWF World Championships

Member Federations from 3 continents are now candidates to host the major event in the IWF calendar for the year 2018 being the World Championships. Six cities sent in their candidatures within the IWF deadline and the IWF President Dr. Tamas Ajan is happy to welcome them. Following the IWF’s circular to Member Federations in August, these are the cities that expressed their interest as host of the 2018 IWF World Championships: Antalya, Turkey Lima, Peru Phuket, Thailand Tbilisi, Georgia Tirana, Albania Tokyo, Japan These outstanding, highly qualified and experienced hosts all organized major weightlifting events in the recent period and / or future major events will be organized in the city. Antalya organized the 2010 IWF World Championships and 2012 European Championships. Lima, under the leadership of Mr. Jose Quinones, NOC and Weightlifting Federation President organized the 2013 IWF Junior and 2015 Youth World Championships; the city is also the host of the 2019 Pan American Games. Phuket concluded recently the 2015 Asian Championships. Tbilisi organized the 2015 European Championships, led by the President of the Georgian Federation President, 3 times Olympic Champion, Kakhi Kakhiashvili. Tirana hosted the 2013 European Championships. Tokyo will organize the 2016 Asian Youth and Junior Championships, the 2017 IWF Junior World Championships and the 2020 Olympic Games. According to the published candidature procedure, the cities / Member Federations will have to send their Candidature File together with guarantee / support letters to the IWF before 17 October.
