Successful debut of the ECOC system at V4 Cup

The  IWF has tested out first time in history the Electronic Change of Call (ECOC) - Tabs replacing Athletes' Card - that will be implemented in future events; all the teams were happily accepting and using the new system. The main focus is that the coaches are using their tablets and they can electronically change the weight of attempts for the athletes. Based on the feedback from the coaches IWF will further develop the system to give more user friendly experience. These experiences and feedback will be the subject of discussion for the Technical Committee meeting at the World Championships in Anaheim, USA. Three countries attended the Visegrad 4 Cup in Prague, CZE (Hungary, Slovakia and the host Czech Republic) where 40 coaches, athletes and weightlifting specialist participated on 3-4 of November, 2017. An Anti-Doping seminar was held by Dr. Eva Nyirfa about IWF Anti-Doping Rules with special regard to Whereabouts submission, retirement, result management, and Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUE) to gain extra knowledge of Anti-Doping. At the second part of the seminar, a local weightlifter has given useful information about sport nutrition advises. On the 4th of November, the team competitions were taken place where the host country, Czech Republic finished first, then Hungary and Slovakia made it to the last place on the podium.    

IWF Development Program, National Level Technical Official (TO) seminar

The Weightlifting Federation of Iceland recently organized a national level Technical Official (TO) seminar in the framework of the IWF Development Program. The organizers invited Taisto Kuoppala from Finland to Iceland to teach during the 2-days seminar. Mr. Kuoppala has been active referee for over 40 years and worked in many Olympic Games and World Championships. The seminar covered all the rules of the IWF TCRR as well as the new changes made in 2017, accompanied with video and practical examples of lifts. Ten participants (5 male and 5 female) finished a written exam at the end of the seminar to become national level TO, those participants later used their newly acquired knowledge as TO in the National Junior Championships taking place the weekend after. IWF reports that the sample of Ms. Iuniarra SIPAIA (SAM) has returned an Adverse Analytical Finding for triamcinolone acetonide (S9. Glucocorticoids). As a consequence, the Athlete is provisionally suspended in view of a potential anti-doping rule violation. In any case where it is determined that the athlete did not commit an anti-doping rule violation, the relevant decision will also be published. Nicu Vlad celebrates his 54th birthday

Nicu Vlad has celebrated his 54th birthday yesterday on November 1st, 2017. He is IWF Vice-President and Chairman of the Technical Committee. Before his career in sport diplomacy, he was one of the biggest weightlifters in history. He won each medal in all the three medal categories, just like standing on the highest place of the podium every time. The only medal missing from his collection is a Bronze medal from the European Championships. He was at his best in 1984 when he became the Olympic Champion in the 90 kg bodyweight category in Los Angeles, then in 1988 in Seoul he finished second in the 100 kg bodyweight category and in 1996 Atlanta he finished third in the 108kg bodyweight category. He earned his World Champion titles in 1986, 1990 then in 1996. He became the best in Europe in 1985 and 1986. He also competed under the Australian flag at the British Commonwealth Games in Victoria in 1994 – winning a Gold medal.  He set more world records and after retiring from sports as an athlete he continued as a coach in his home country. Nicu Vlad was inaugurated in the IWF Hall of Fame in 2006 as well as the Vice-President of the Romanian Olympic Committee. He held several positions in the IWF such as 1st Vice-President and Vice-President. IWF Development Program, Advanced Coaching Symposium

Due to the generous support of the IWF Development Program the Australian Weightlifting Federation was able to organize an Advanced Coaching Symposium for 20 participants at the Australian Institute of Sport, Canberra on the 21st-23rd October 2017. The principle Presenter was Zygmunt Smalcerz (POL) former Olympic & World champion and later Coach of the Polish and USA National & Olympic teams and also member of the IWF Hall of Fame. He was ably supported by: Professor Greg Haff (USA) President of National Strength and Conditioning Association USA. Professor at the Edith Cowan University, Perth Leo Isaac (AUS) former Olympic, World Championships & Commonwealth Games athlete and now National Team Coach Australia Lyn Jones (AUS) Member IWF Coaching & Research Committee The presentations were as follows: Comparison of Polish & USA Weightlifting systems – problems and solutions by Zygmunt Smalcerz Periodisation of Weightlifting training by Greg Haff Programming of Training by Zygmunt Smalcerz High Performance Models by Leo Isaac. Assistance exercises for Senior & Junior weightlifters byZygmunt Smalcerz Long-term athlete development by Greg Haff Peaking and tapering for weightlifting competition by Greg Haff Special preparation for weightlifting competition by Zygmunt Smalcerz Warm-up for weightlifting training by Zygmunt Smalcerz. Changes in IWF Technical Rules and their effect on Coaching by Lyn Jones The Symposium was a resounding success and was enjoyed and appreciated by all.
