IWF Education Seminar in Bangkok

The IWF held its Educational Seminar in Bangkok, Thailand! Grassroots and education are a major point of focus for the IWF and athletes participating at the 2017 IWF Youth World Championships were enthusiastic about getting extra knowledge in important subjects such as Anti-Doping or the 2018 Youth Olympic Games. IWF President, Dr. Tamas Ajan also came to greet the attendees and underlined the importance of this qualification competition. ANAHEIM READY TO TELL WEIGHTLIFTING’S STORY

Logo for the sport’s premiere event in 2017 released ANAHEIM, Calif. (April 6, 2017)—Featuring the shining sun that defines Southern California, 2017 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championships Organizing Committee is proud to introduce the event’s logo that will descend on the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, Calif. Nov. 28 - Dec. 5, 2017. The logo features an athlete, mid-lift, raising a stylized sun overhead. It marries the beauty of the sport of Weightlifting and Anaheim’s position as the sun-splashed destination of Southern California. The logo also pays homage to LA2024’s Olympic bid campaign, “Follow the Sun.” “We think this logo ties together everything we want to tell the world about this event,” USA Weightlifting CEO Phil Andrews said. “Weightlifting is a beautiful sport. Anaheim is a beautiful city. This logo helps us tell that story.” “Anaheim is thrilled to host the 2017 IWF World Championships,” said Roy Edmondson, vice president,Sports Anaheim. “The new logo marries the essence and warmth of Anaheim with the strength and beauty of weightlifting. The city of Anaheim can’t wait for the best of the best of weightlifting to descend on our city later this year.” More than 300 athletes from 70 countries are expected to compete in the 2017 IWF World Championships. For the first time in history, the United States will hold consecutive World Championships. Houston played host to the last World Championships in 2015. Thousands of fans, technical officials and coaches from around the world will attend the event at the Anaheim Convention Center, which will inject millions of dollars into the Orange County, California economy. First European medal – Gold in the Snatch for GARAEV Zulfat

W53kg Three good lifts in the Snatch earned the Gold Medal to SINISTER TORRES Yenny (COL) going 80-83-85kg. She missed two of her Clean and Jerk attempt and couldn’t earn a place on the podium for her Total of 185kg. Winning all kind of medals, YU Mengqian (CHN) won the most important one, the Gold in the Total. Ending second in the Snatch and third in the Clean and Jerk, she won the Gold with a Total of 189kg - a 1kg advantage over KIM Il Gyong (PRK). Strong in the Clean and Jerk, KIM had 3 good lifts and secured herself the Silver in the Total. Seemed that the other Chinese lifter HUANG Xuemei (CHN) would have good medal chances too, but after her second place in the Clean and Jerk with 106kg, but her 186kg Total was only enough to equal the result of KONOTOP Kamila (UKR). The Ukrainian lifter won a Bronze in the Snatch and in the Total while finishing 5th in the Clean and Jerk. M 62kg Russia made it’s entry to the medal tally at the 2017 IWF Youth World Championships Bangkok, Thailand. GARAEV Zulfat (RUS) won the first European Medal - Gold - in the Snatch with 128kg. After showing his supremacy in the Snatch, he came out in the Clean and Jerk on a starting weight of 151kg. After missing it once, twice, he missed the third attempt too so couldn’t secure a Total. Snatch Silver Medallist SAVELYEV Anatoliy (KAZ) secured his position in the Clean and Jerk with a first lift of 147kg. He then came out for two more good attempt. With 6 good lifts, he won the Gold Medal in the Total with 281kg. After three good lifts in the Snatch, WEI Yunban (CHN) came out for his first attempt in the Clean and Jerk at 150kg but the weight seemed to heavy and he had to give it another try. Succeeding at his second one, he took his last lift of 156kg but couldn’t take away the victory from SAVELYEV.  With a 4th and 5th place, SETIAWAN Muhammad Halim (INA) needed a bit of luck too but stood on the third place of the podium for his Total of

Women 48kg HAN Jong Sim (PRK) won two Gold medals and a Silver one. In the Snatch she only reached 79kg - missing her attempt at 82kg - leaving the Gold Medal to HE Si (CHN). The exact opposite happened in the Clean and Jerk, where HAN had three good lifts (97kg, 100kg, 102kg) and HE missed twice on 101kg. Bronze Medallist ended far behind the leading duo with 23kg less in the Total. BUACHATTURAT Chotima (THA) made it to 158kg wile Gold Medal HAN’s Total 181kg.      Men 56kg Taking the lead in the Snatch, CHEN Jian (CHN) missed the podium by only 1kg. Ranking 6th in the Clean and Jerk, he ended with a Total of 236kg and a 4th place.  His Chinese team mate CHEN Maoran (CHN) came back from far and had to get to the top from his 5th place in the Snatch where he only lifted 106kg. His Clean and Jerk was much stronger and he defeated all the other competitors with his last lift at 135kg. This gave him just enough advantage in the Total - 1kg - where he finished first with 241kg. Three Silver Medals went to JEREMY Lalrinnunga (IND) earning the first medal for India at the competition. Men 50kg - First Gold goes to Thailand The 2017 IWF Youth World Championships Bangkok, THA kicked off with the Men’s 50kg bodyweight category. The home country, Thailand gave it a strong start with the victory of CHOMCHUEN Teerapat (THA).  LE Nguyen Quoc Bao attempted to break the Youth World Record in the Snatch with 103kg, but missed his attempt. After his Gold Medal in Snatch, he won Bronze in Clean & Jerk with 119 kg and Silver in Total with 215kg. Silver medallist CHOMCHUEN Natthawat (THA) in Snatch finished 5th in the Clean and Jerk with 118 kg and in Total he missed the podium by only 1kg. His twin brother CHOMCHUEN Teerapat stepped up from his 4th place in the Snatch reaching a Clean and Jerk of 125 kg - 1 kg behind the Youth World Record – winning the Gold with a Total of 216 kg. The other Medals were shared between DENG Hangpeng (CHN) with a 3rd place in Snatch and HUANG  Shiguo (CHN) Silver medallist in the Clean and Jerk and Bronze in the Total with 213 kg. Women 44kg - Chinese victory In the lightest women bodyweight category - 44kg - all Gold Medals went to CHEN Yarou (CHN). Lifting 72kg in the Snatch, she made it to 92kg in the Clean and Jerk - 1 kg less than the Youth World Record. With her Total of 164kg, she defeated strong opponents from Colombia and Democratic People's Republic of Korea. The other Chinese lifter, HUANG Yating finished 4th in all events. All Silver Medals went to BERRIO ZULUAGA Manuela Andrea (COL)  - 71kg, 89kg, 160 kg - and PAK Song Hui (PRK) won all the Bronze Medals - 70kg, 87kg,

IWF visit in Tokyo

On the occasion of the IWF Technical visit for the 2017 IWF Junior World Championships Tokyo, JPN Attila Adami, Director General met the Organizing Committee led by Japan Weightlifting Association President Yoshiyuki Miyake. The delegation went to meet Suzuki Daichi, Japan Sport Minister who gave assurance of his support. Attila Adamfi with Reiko Chinen participated in the Tokyo 2020 Sport Managers' meeting and met Yoshiro Mori, Tokyo 2020 President and Koji Murofushi, Tokyo 2020 Sport Director. Despite difficulties faced by the Organizing Committee, weightlifting is assured to maintain its centrally located venue - Tokyo International Forum. Since the IWF introduced an 8th Women bodyweight category in order to achieve gender equality, the request for inclusion on the program of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games was officially submitted to the IOC.   The request was also discussed during the meetings with Tokyo 2020 leaders. Tokyo 2020 also started the collect of discarded electronic devices with the hope of collecting as much as eight tonnes of gold, silver and bronze in order to produce the Olympic Medals for the Games. The International Weightlifting Federation became the first IF to contribute to the Tokyo 2020 Medal Project with the donation of discarded telephones.
