Thai Gold Medal on the first day

Men 50kg – First Gold goes to Thailand

The 2017 IWF Youth World Championships Bangkok, THA kicked off with the Men’s 50kg bodyweight category. The home country, Thailand gave it a strong start with the victory of CHOMCHUEN Teerapat (THA). 

LE Nguyen Quoc Bao attempted to break the Youth World Record in the Snatch with 103kg, but missed his attempt. After his Gold Medal in Snatch, he won Bronze in Clean & Jerk with 119 kg and Silver in Total with 215kg.

Silver medallist CHOMCHUEN Natthawat (THA) in Snatch finished 5th in the Clean and Jerk with 118 kg and in Total he missed the podium by only 1kg.

His twin brother CHOMCHUEN Teerapat stepped up from his 4th place in the Snatch reaching a Clean and Jerk of 125 kg – 1 kg behind the Youth World Record – winning the Gold with a Total of 216 kg.

The other Medals were shared between DENG Hangpeng (CHN) with a 3rd place in Snatch and HUANG  Shiguo (CHN) Silver medallist in the Clean and Jerk and Bronze in the Total with 213 kg.

Women 44kg – Chinese victory

In the lightest women bodyweight category – 44kg – all Gold Medals went to CHEN Yarou (CHN). Lifting 72kg in the Snatch, she made it to 92kg in the Clean and Jerk – 1 kg less than the Youth World Record.

With her Total of 164kg, she defeated strong opponents from Colombia and Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. The other Chinese lifter, HUANG Yating finished 4th in all events.

All Silver Medals went to BERRIO ZULUAGA Manuela Andrea (COL)  – 71kg, 89kg, 160 kg – and PAK Song Hui (PRK) won all the Bronze Medals – 70kg, 87kg, 157kg.
