Armenia: 10 athletes in Bucharest

Initial Entries indicate ten Armenian weightlifters set to compete in eight different categories at the 2009 European Weightlifting Championships in Bucharest Romania. After finishing in 1st place at the 2008 European Weightlifting Championships in Lignano, Italy with thirteen combined Gold medals, three combined silver medals, and one bronze, Team Armenia looks to repeat their successful performance this year in Bucharest. Armenia will be represented by seven male athletes, and three female athletes. Arakel Mirzoyan and Gevorg Kakoyan will compete in the 69kg category, Gevorik Poghosyan and Aram Andrikyan will be performing in the 85kg category. Gegham Atoyan (94kg,) Artur Babayan (105kg,) and Ruben Aleksanyan (105+ kg) round out the group of Armenian men at the competition. Artur Babayan is the only returning male athlete from last year's competition. Gevorg Davtyan (Gold Medalist 77kg,) Ara Khachatryan (Silver Medalist 77kg,) and Tigran L. Martirosyan (Silver Medalist 69kg) do not appear on the starting list this year. On the women's competition, it's a bit of different story, as the three Armenian weightlifters Meline Daluzyan (63kg,) Nazik Avdalyan (69kg,) and Hripsime Khurshudyan (75kg,) are all past Gold Medalists at the European Championships. They will look to repeat their performance from the last couple of years. Meline Daluzyan has won the Gold two years in a row, while Nazik Avdalyan improved on her Silver medal performance from 2007 by winning the Gold in 2008. Hripsime Khurshudyan would have repeated her Gold Medal performance from 2007 had she not failed in the snatch event by over-extending herself with a 115kg. lift which she failed. She would receive the top spot in the Clean-and-jerk but would not place because of the missing marks in the snatch. All three women are in top shape and should repeat their Gold Medal performances this

IWF President’s press conference in Madrid

Dr. Tamás Aján, IWF President had a press conferenc a day after the Electoral Congress was closed. Ma Wenguang appeared for the first time representing his new position as IWF's General Secretary. Emilio Estarlik, President of the Spanish Federation, newly elected Executive Board Member accompanied the two top leaders of IWF. Mr. Aján in his opening speech underlined the importance of the fact IWF had a record number of federations (132) took part at the congess representing their viewpoints and ideas forming the future of weighlifting. 'We modernized our Constitution according the demands of the 21st century.What is the next step? Among the very first tasks we have to decide about the qualifacition system for the coming Olympics."- he added. Introducing the new General Secretary first he expressed his opinions exceptionally high level of Beijing Olympics. Mr. Ma had a great part of the success of weightlifting in Beijing. Mr. Aján thought his election was a milestone in the history of this sport as he is the first non-European General Secretary. The President said the fact that average age of the Executive Board is younger than before is lucky from point of view to have fresh ideas and innovations in weightlifting. 'They will contribute a lot to the future image of our sport'- Mr. Aján told. Alltogether 35 officials were elected (18 Europe, 6 Asia, 5 Americas, 4 Oceania, 2 Africa).   Finally Mr. Aján answered to a question how much he admires Madrid and Spanish people. As a Hungarian born person he is very proud to know his compatriot's Ferenc Puskás (called Pancho in Madrid) ever green popularity in the Spanish capital. The first day of the newly elected Executive Board

  At its first, informal meeting, the newly elected IWF Executive Board outlined the future program of the Board. Immediate tasks include the selection of members to complete the Board and the various Committees, co-ordination of the future World Championships and the publication of the Constitution, Technical and Competition Rules. Dr. Tamás Aján (HUN), President and Mr. Ma Wenguang (CHN), General Secretary confirmed that they would work in close co-operation to the ultimate benefit of the sport of weightlifting. The Executive Board will convene for its first official meeting in the near future.
