Dr. Tamás Aján, President of the International Weightlifting Federation and Honorary Member of the IOC received the Olympic Order
Dr. Tamás Aján, President of the International Weightlifting Federation and Honorary Member of the IOC received the Olympic Order on February 28, 2010, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The Order was presented to Dr. Aján by Dr. Jacques Rogge, President of the IOC. The Olympic Order is the highest award of the Olympic Movement, created by the IOC in May 1975. The Olympic Order is awarded to individuals for particularly distinguished contribution to the Olympic Movement.
Tulo wins Fiji Sportman of the Year
LEVUKA native weightlifter Manueli Tulo won the 2009 Sportsman of the Year Award at the Fiji Sports Council Awards on Friday night. This is the second consecutive year Tulo has won this award. Tulo, who is based at the Oceania Weightlifting Institute in New - Caledonia, produced a remarkable achievement last year setting records, winning gold medals and also was awarded one of the eight Commonwealth Sports awards. Tulo, was not at the awards ceremony as he was in New Caledonia. Accepting the award on his behalf was Tulo's father Sunia Uatela-tela. After receiving the award from chief guest the President, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, his father said he was proud of his son's achievement. Although Tulo is only 19 years of age, he is the current Oceania Senior and Junior Champion in the 56kg category. His best lifts are 106kg snatch, and 135kg clean & jerk. Another young teenage weightlifter from Levuka, Maria Liku was the runner-up in the Sportswoman of the Year award. Sports shutterbugs can show off chops at YOG
Calling all those interested in sports photography: here's your chance to capture the best moments at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG), which will be held in Singapore from Aug 14 to 26.The Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (SYOGOC) is looking for photographers with tertiary qualifications and above who have an interest in volunteering for the YOG.They can sign up for the YOG's photography workshop, where experienced photographers and trainers will provide hands-on training at sports events such as the weightlifting, volleyball, athletic and rowing competitions at the upcoming Friendship Games.Participants will be provided with equipment and given tips to improve their sports-photography skills. After the workshop, SYOGOC will assign selected participants for specific photography roles during the YOG.To date, more than 200 participants have registered. Registration closes on Sunday. Technical Delegates in London for 2012 Olympic Games inspection visit
Mr. Sam Coffa, IWF Vice President and Mr. Attila Ádámfi, IWF Competition Director are currently visiting London in their capacity as Technical Delegates for the 2012 Olympic Games.The TDs are visiting and inspecting venues and discussing the preparations with LOCOG 2012 represented by Ms. Debbie Jevans, Director of Sport, Mr. David Luckes, Head of Sport Competition, Mr. Matthew Curtain, Weightlifting Manager. The Technical Delegates availed themselves of the opportunity to meet with the officials of the weightlifting federations of the "Home Countries" within the British Olympic Association: GBR, WAL, NIR, SCO.
