Salimikordasiabi and Chinshanlo are the Best of 2012

Over 1,300 verified votes took part in the election of the Lifters of the Year for 2012 on this website, launched by World Weightlifting. Among the men, Iranian Behdad SALIMIKORDASIABI was elected as the Best Lifter for the last year by a large margin. Ilya ILYIN from Kazakhstan received the second largest number of votes and Polish Adrian ZIELINSKI became the third best of 2012. In the women's field the top three are separated by only a few points - the closest voting ever! The top three all represent Kazakhstan. Technical Delegate approves Weightlifting Venue for 2013 Universiade, Kazan

At a recent visit to the Tatarstan capital, Kazan, FISU Technical Delegate Anikó Németh-Móra approved the competition venue for this summer's Universiade. The "Ak Bure" ("White Wolf") Sports Hall, now serving the one of Kazan's ice hockey clubs, will be used for weightlifting at the University Games coming up in July. The construction of the new venues and the reconstruction of existing venues for the 26 different sports on the Universiade program is in full progress in Kazan. About 7,000 athletes are expected to participate, of which around 400 in weightlifting. Already now, as per the preliminary entries, 42 countries have indicated to send male, and 32 countries to enter female competitors in weightlifting, and more are expected to nominate lifters. VII Mediterranean Weightlifting Cup in Brindisi, Italy

The VII Mediterranean Weightlifting Cup was held in the southern Italian city of Brindisi on January 26. Twelve countries participated in the event that took place at the Palazzetto Leonardo Da Vinci sport centre. It was the first time in the history of the Mediterranean Cup, that athletes from Israel and Palestine competed in the same competition. Televised by Sky Sport and RAI public TV, the Italian quartet ascended to highest step on the winner's podium, in a repeat of their 2011 victory in Tel Aviv. The Final Team Classification is as follows: ITA, ISR, TUN, MAR, FRA, BIH, MLT, SLO, PLE, SMR, ESP, TUR. Several dignitaries attended the VII Mediterranean Weightlifting Cup such as Dr. Antonio Urso President of the Italian Weightlifting Federation, EWF President and IWF Executive Board Member, Khaled Mhalhel, WFA President and IWF Executive Board Member, Ibrahim Waleed Al-Abdulla, President of the Arabic Weightlifting Federation and Mohamed Hassan Jaloud, General Secretary of the Arabic Weightlifting Federation and Vice President of the AWF. Elections of the Mediterranean Weightlifting Confederation

On 25 January 2013, the Mediterranean Weightlifting Confederation held its elections with the participation of 12 countries: ALB, BIH, FRA, ESP, ITA, ISR, LBA, LIB, MAR, SLO, SMR, and TUN. Maurizio Lo Buono, single candidate, was reelected to another four years as President of the Mediterranean Weightlifting Confederation; the 1st Vice President is Mohamed Nadir Feki, the Vice President is Moukalled Hassenen and the General Secretary Kamla Maghoub. The Executive Board Members are: Elez Gjoza, Michel Soto, Mustafa Saad Zintani, Jesmond Caruana, and Maria Dolores Rubio

Elections in the Austrian Weightlifting Federation

The Austrian Weightlifting Federation held their election for the period 2013 to 2016 on 19th January 2013. Gerhard Peya is the new President, further Executive Board members are Gottfried Langthaler (Vice-President), Robert Horacek (Treasurer), Dipl.-Ing.Andreas Degwerth (Secretary), Katharina Rimböck-Peya (Referee Chairwoman), Markus Koch (Public Relation Manager), Ludwig Schadler, Ewald Fischer and Christian Kathrein (Vice Sport Directors), Manfred Modrey (Masters Chairman).
