Kazan Universiade opened with breathtaking Ceremony

KAZAN – (From FISU News) Those present at the Opening Ceremony of the 27th Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia, will not disagree … it was a breathtakingly awesome opening. The sold-out stadium was overwhelmed with the visual magic the host conjured on the 360° projection screen (2,400 m²) in the middle of the Kazan Arena and carried by four supporting 60m-high arches, weighing each more than 500 tons. Universiade ready to start with record numbers in weightlifting

The 27th edition of the Summer Universiades, the biggest ever, will be kicked off officially tonight at the Opening Ceremony at Kazan, Tatarstan's capital (Russia). With 27 sports on the program in 40 venues - many of them brand new - and the Universiade Village accommodating about 13,000 participants, the Universiade is the biggest sports event in the world this year. Weightlifting has already had its technical meetings and after the verification of entries a fantastic new record of 50 countries feature in the Start List with 253 athletes. Competitions start on 7th July and will run through 12th July 2013 at the AK-Bure Sports

Buenos Aires elected as Host City for 2018 Youth Olympic Games

The 3rd Summer Youth Olympic Games will be hosted by the city of Buenos Aires in 2018, International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge announced today following a vote by the IOC members at an Extraordinary IOC Session in Lausanne. Buenos Aires (Argentina) was elected ahead of Glasgow (Great Britain) and Medellín (Colombia). For full results of the vote, please see below. Prior to the vote, the Candidate Cities each had 15 minutes to give a presentation to the Session, followed by questions. Evaluation Commission Chair Claudia Bokel addressed the Session on behalf of the Commission. “We had three excellent candidates from which to choose a host city today, each with the capability of staging memorable Youth Olympic Games in 2018,” said IOC President Rogge. “I would like to congratulate Buenos Aires and their bid team for their dedication to and enthusiasm for the Youth Olympic Games project. I have no doubt they will build on the successes of Singapore 2010 and Nanjing 2014 to provide a platform on which the best young athletes from around the world can compete and learn about the Olympic values.” The announcement was the culmination of a bidding process launched in September 2011, which originally included six Candidate Cities - the three other cities were Guadalajara (Mexico), Poznań (Poland) and Rotterdam (Netherlands). After a thorough review of the Candidature Files and other relevant documentation submitted by five of the Candidate Cities (Poznań withdrew from the bidding process), the IOC Working Group, led by Claudia Bokel, presented a report to the IOC Executive Board (EB). Based on this report, the EB announced Buenos Aires, Glasgow and Medellín as shortlisted candidates at a meeting in Lausanne in February 2013. The 2nd Summer Youth Olympic Games will be held in Nanjing, China, from 16 to 28 August 2014.
