Day 4 – 2021 IWF World Championships and Commonwealth Championships

The fourth day of the competition featured the Men 67kg and Men 73kg categories. Men 67kg Category In the Men 67kg among the lifters we had the current Junior World Record holder , the Youth World Record holder and also Tokyo 2020 Olympians. In the Snatch portion of the program, based on the starting weights Luis Javier Mosquera Lozano (COL) had the biggest chance of winning Gold however he surprisingly bombed out. As the Colombian could not manage a good lift in Snatch, 3 athletes were fighting for first place and the medals. One of them was Talha Talib (PAK) who was placed 5th at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games this summer. He started at 143kg however after the first successful lift he could not manage another one therefore he won Bronze at the end. The Uzbek Doston Yokubov started with the promising 140kg and after went to 143kg but was unsuccessful and then on the third attempt with a good lift of 144kg won the Silver medal. Zulfat Garaev (RWF) started at 142kg then lifted 146kg in his second attempt but failed his last attempt of 148kg. However, 146kg was enough for winning Gold in the category. In Clean&Jerk, the Snatch Bronze medalist Talib bombed out, and the Colombian Luis Javier Mosquera Lozano retired from the competition before his first lift. In front of the home crowd the two Uzbek athletes, Doston Yokubov and Adkhamjon Ergashev provided us with a great show. Ergashev started at 168kg and then lifted 174kg on his second attempt. As he failed his last attempt he won the Bronze in C&J. The other two medals were decided between the two strongest in the field Doston Yokubov and the Colombian Francisco Antonio Mosquera Valencia. Yokubov achieved 3 from 3 with 172kg-176kg-180kg. The first place was relying on whether Mosquera could manage his last attempt of 181kg. The local crowd was anxiously waiting for the last lift of the session. Mosquera could have won his first World Champion title but failed to do so as he could not manage 181kg. With that Mosquera won Silver and Yokubov the Gold. In Total Doston Yokubov (UZB) won Gold with 324kg, Silver went to Francisco Antonio Mosquera Valencia (COL) with 316kg and Zulfat Garaev (RWF) finished the podium with 315kg. Men 67kg Podium @IWF/Steve Galvan Commonwealth Championships – Men 67kg In the Men 67kg category Lalrinnunga Jeremy (IND), the current Youth World Record holder won the Gold medal of the Commonwealth Championships and furthermore the qualifying spot for the 2022 Commonwealth Games with a 305kg Total, after Talib Talha (PAK) bombed out in C&J in Group A. Second place went to Joseph Umoafia Edidiong (NGR) with 295kg in Total and third place went to Upasakalage Manoj Maduwantha Wije Appuwa (SRI) with the Total of 254kg. Commonwealth Championships Men 67kg Podium @IWF/Steve Galvan Men 73kg Category The last session of the day featured the Men 73kg category. In Snatch, the medals were decided between Sergei Petrov (RWF), Suttipong Jeeram (THA) and Briken Calja (ALB) who placed 4th at Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Petrov went 3 from 3 (144kg-149kg-153kg) and won Bronze. Jeeram and Calja were fighting for the first place as both lifted 154kg on their second attempt and went for the same weight on their third. Suttipong started first but was unsuccessful with 156kg so everyone was waiting whether Calja could manage the lift. Finally Calja showed consistency and achieved 3 from 3 and won the Gold medal.  In Clean&Jerk the medals were decided between Hansol Jeong (KOR), Briken Calja (ALB) and Rahmat Erwin Abdullah (INA) who was the Bronze medalist of this years Olympic Games. Jeong after the first successful lift of  181kg failed both his second and third attempt therefore won the Bronze medal in C&J. The fight between Cajla and Abdullah got really exciting when both of them lifted 186kg on their second attempt so everything came down to their last ones. In order, Calja came first and tried to finish his competition with 190kg but it was a no lift. This also meant that Abdullah already won the Gold medal in C&J before his last attempt. In order to also won the Total Gold medal, Abdullah focused on his last attempt of 192kg which he impressively managed. In Total Rahmat Erwin Abdullah (INA) won Gold with 343kg, Silver went to Briken Calja(ALB) with 342kg and Suttipong Jeeram (THA) finished in third place with 334kg in Total. Men 73kg Podium @IWF/Steve Galvan Commonwealth Championships In the Commonwealth Championships, Achinta Sheuli from India won the Gold in Total and therefore qualified for next year’s Commonwealth Games. Silver was won by Erry Hidayat Muhammad from Malaysia, and Mudiyanselage Indika Chathur Dissanayake from Sri Lanka won the Bronze. IWF Commits to Meeting IOC Requirements to Ensure Weightlifting Place at LA 2028

The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) yesterday welcomed the decision of the IOC Executive Board to maintain weightlifting’s place on the Paris 2024 programme and reiterated its commitment to completing reforms aimed at safeguarding the sport’s long-term Olympic future. “On behalf of weightlifters around the world, we express our gratitude to the IOC Executive Board for confirming weightlifting’s place on the Paris 2024 programme,” said IWF Interim President Dr Michael Irani. “We take careful note of the IOC’s concerns and we are confident these concerns will be overcome as we continue to implement our wide-ranging reforms. “We are fully committed to upholding the highest standards of good governance. We held clean and successful competitions at Tokyo 2020. And the adoption of our new constitution reflects our desire to build our future in the right way. The new constitution already guarantees the future IWF Executive Board will have greater athlete representation and improved gender equity than ever before, demonstrating the change of culture the IOC has referenced. “We expect that by the end of the first semester of 2022 we will be in a position to hold the IWF elections which will mark the beginning of a new chapter in IWF’s history. While we are eager for the elections to be held as soon as possible, it is imperative that we implement governance changes carefully so that this new chapter begins with a strong legal basis that is beyond reproach. I am confident the future Executive Board of the IWF will be well-placed to satisfy the IOC’s requirements and ensure the place of weightlifting on the Olympic Programme of Los Angeles 2028.” The IWF Elections were due to be held during the Congress scheduled for 20-21 December 2021 but were postponed after receiving the independent IWF Legal Commission’s

Day 3 – 2021 IWF World Championships and Commonwealth Championships

On the third day the action continued with the Men 61kg, Men 67kg (Group C) and the Women 55kg categories. The day started with the combined session of M61kg B and M67kg C session which was followed by the Women 55kg Group B. At 16:00 local it was time for the Group A’s of the day. Women 55kg Group A In the Women 55kg Group A, altogether 11 athletes competed for the medals of the World Championships and one of them Adijat Adenike OLARINOYE from Nigeria was also going for first place of the Commonwealth Championships as well as for winning the qualifying spot for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. In Snatch the starting weights were almost levelled between the athletes and also throughout the whole Snatch session. Adijat Adenike Olarinoye (NGR) and Svitlana Samuliak (UKR) both started at 88kg, then increased to 90kg which only the Ukrainian could manage on her second attempt. Svitolina then went for 91kg which she managed while Olarinoye lifted 90kg on her last attempt. At the end Samuliak won the Silver and Olarinoye the Bronze. Ghofrane Bellkhir, this year’s Junior World Champion showed consistency, lifted 90kg on her first, and 92kg on her second attempt. Since she already won the Snatch Gold with her second lift, she declined her last attempt. In Clean&Jerk there was a big surprise when Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam (IND) from Group B won the Gold with 114kg. The Silver was won by Eunji Ham (KOR) with also 114kg who now lifted 2 kgs less then at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games this summer. Bronze went to Adijat Adenike Olarinoye (NGR) with her second attempt of 113kg. In Total the podium was the following: Ghofrane Belkhir (TUN) won Gold with 203kg, Silver went to Adijat Adenike Olarinoye (NGR) with the same Total as Belkhir, while Svitlana Samuliak won Bronze with 201kg.   Women 55kg Podium @IWF/Steve Galvan Commonwealth Championships – Women 55kg In the Women 55kg category Adijat Adenike Olarinoye (NGR) not only won 3 World Championships medals but also won the Commonwealth Championships and therefore qualified for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Second place went to Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam (IND) with 198kg in Total and third place went to Tenishia Thornton (MLT) with the Total of 162kg. Commonwealth Championships Women 55kg Podium @IWF/Steve Galvan Men 61kg Group A At 19:00 Tashkent time, the action continued with the M 61kg Group A. In Snatch, those 3 athletes won the medals who based on their starting weigthts were considered to have the best chance to do so. Shota Mishvelidze (GEO) started his lifts at 126kg which he missed at his first attempt but could manage on his second. Next came Rok SHIN (KOR) with 127kg and Seyitjan Mirzayev (TKM) with 128kg which he managed on his second attempt. As the Turkmen could not manage his last attempt he won the Bronze with 128kg. Shin increased his weight to 130 then came the Georgian with 131kg on his last attempt. The first place was depending on whether Shin could manage his last attempt of 132kg. With a great lift he went 3 from 3 and therefore won the Gold medal while the Silver went to Mishvelidze with 131kg. In Clean&Jerk, the Bronze went to Seraj Abdulrahim M Al Saleem (KSA) with his second attempt of 155kg, while Shota Mishvelidze (GEO) who lifted the same weight became the second in the category. Gold was won by the still the Junior Athlete, Rok Shin (KOR) with the second lift of 156kg. Rok Shin who showed an impressive performance during tonights session, tried to beat the Junior World Record of C&J and Total with his last attempt of 164kg but failed to do so. In Total Shin won the Gold with 288kg, Silver was won by Shota Mishvelidze (GEO) with the Total of 286kg and Seraj Abdulrahim M Al Saleem finished the podium with 282kg. Commonwealth Championships Men 61kg  In the Men 61kg category the Gold went to Aznil Bin Bidin Muhamad (MAS) with the Total of 273kg and therefore directly qualified for next year's Commonwealth Games. Golden Day for Thailand – Day 2 at the 2021 IWF World Championships and Commonwealth Championships

On the second day here is Tashkent the program continued with the Women 45kg and 49kg categories. In the combined B session (W45kg and W49kg) Najla Khoirunissa (INA) lifted the highest Total with 144kg while the only athlete competing at both the World Championships and the Commonwealth Championships, Mudiyanselage Srimali Samarak Divisekara from Sri Lanka lifted 136kg in Total and with that directly qualified for the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.   Mudiyanselage Srimali Samarak DIVISEKARA (SRI) @IWF/Steve Galvan Women 45kg Group A At 16:00 local time the weightlifting platform gave floor to the W 49kg Group A where 9 athletes competed. In Snatch there was a big fight between 3 athletes, Thanyathon Sukcharoen (THA), Saziye Erdogan (TUR), the 2019 World Champion in this category and Manuela Andrea Berrio Zuluaga (COL). Both Sukcharoen and Berrio Zuluaga started at 75kg and both of their first attempts were successful while Erdogan had also a first good lift with 74kg. All of them missed their second attempt and the Colombian also couldn’t make a third good lift so she won the Bronze medal in the category. On their third attempt neither Sukcharoen nor Erdogan changed from the weight of their second attempt and both were successful on their third lift. Sukcharoen won the Gold with 77kg and Erdogan took the Silver with 76kg. In Clean&Jerk the same athletes won the medals but in different order. The Turkish and Thai athletes both started at 93kg and they were successful in their attempts while the Colombian Berrio Zuluaga made a 95kg first good lift. After their first attempts many no lifts followed. Neither Berrio Zuluaga nor Erdogan could manage a good lift after their first lifts, and Sukcharoen could only level Berrio Zuluaga’s first lift of 95kg. At the end Manuela Andrea Berrio Zuluaga won the Gold with her first attempt, Thanyathon took the Silver with also 95kg and Saziye Erdogan won the Bronze medal. In Total, the podium was the following: Thanyathon Sukcharoen won Gold with 172kg, Manuela Andrea Berrio Zuluaga took the Silver with 170kg while Saziye Erdogan finished the podium with 169kg and won the Bronze medal. Women 45kg Podium @ IWF/Steve Galvan Women 49kg Group A At 19:00 Tashkent time, the action continued with the W 49kg Group A. In Snatch, the Thai athlete, Surudchana Khambao dominated the field as she only stared her lifts when the others already finished. She went 3 of 3 with 82, 84 and 86kg and won the Gold medal. In the case of the other 2 medals there was a bigger uncertainty. Rira Suzuki (JPN) started at 78kg and managed a good lift however her second and third attempt were unsuccessful. The Turkmen Yulduz Dzumabayeva, the 2018 World Champion in 45kg, started lower than Suzuki by 2 kg which she managed to lift only on her second attempt. Dzumabayeva tried 79kg on her third lift but was unsuccessful in her last attempt. Therefore, Suzuki won the Silver in Snatch while Dzumabayeva took Bronze. In Clean&Jerk, Dzumabayeva from Turkmenistan had great chances based on her starting weight but sadly bombed out so one medal spot was up for grabs in the category. The two athlete from Japan, Rira Suzuki and Ibuki Takahashi both started at the same weight - 101kg - which they both lifted on their second attempts but as Takahashi did it first and none of them managed a good lift on their third attempt, she won the Silver and the Snatch Silver medalist Suzuki won the Bronze. Gold once again went to Khambao from Thailand who won with her second successful attempt of 105kg.  In Total, the Gold went to Surodchana Khambao (THA) with 191 kg, Silver was won by Rira Suzuki (JPN) with 179kg and Ibuki Takahashi (JPN) won the Bronze with 172 kg. Women 49 kg Podium @IWF/Steve Galvan Commonwealth Championships In the Commonwealth Championships, Stella Peter Kingsley from Nigeria won the Gold in Total and therefore qualified for next year’s Commonwealth Championships. Day 1 – 2021 IWF World Championships and Commonwealth Championships

The 2021 IWF World Championships in conjunction with the Commonwealth Championships kicked off with the Men 55kg category on 7th December 2021 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.   Men 55kg Group B   The day started with the M 55kg Group B where 8 athletes competed. In Snatch Daniel LUNGU (MDA) lifted the highest with 109 kg while in Clean & Jerk Miguel Angel SUAREZ MESA lifted 138 kg on his 2nd attempt achieving the best C&J and Total in Group B with 242 kg.   Men 55kg Group A   At 19:00 Tashkent time, the action continued with the M 55kg Group A. In Snatch the 2019 Asian Champion, Mansour Abdulrahim M AL SALEEM (KSA) won Gold with his 2nd attempt of 118kg, the Silver went to Arli CHONTEY (KAZ) the 2020 Asian Champion with the same weight, while Muammer SAHIN (TUR) won the Bronze with 116kg.   In Clean&Jerk, the Snatch Gold medalist, Mansour bombed out, so the field was open for the Clean&Jerk and Total medals. In C&J the two juniors of the Group won the first 2 medals. Gold was won by Angel Hriskov RUSEV (BUL) the current Junior World Record holder who tried to level his junior world record of 147kg but failed at the end, but his second attempt of 144kg earned him first place in C&J. Silver went to Mohamad Aniq BIN KASDAN (MAS) with 142kg which also earned him the first place in the Commonwealth Championships and in addition he directly qualified for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The Bronze went to the Snatch silver medalist Arli CHONTEY (KAZ) with 142 kg.
