Day 2 – First World Record of the 2022 IWF Junior World Championships

The program of the second day featured the Women 55kg (A and B Group) and the Men 61kg (A and B Group) categories. Women 55kg Category The Women 55kg Group B started the day at 11:00 local time, where the best result was achieved by Tenishia THORNTON (MLT) with 180 in Total. The Women 55kg A Group was the third competition of the day with 11 athletes competiting for the World Championships titles. Among the athletes were Nina STERCKX, Tokyo 2020 Olympian in W49kg category and Svitlana SAMULIAK (UKR) 2021 IWF World Championships Bronze medalist. In the Snatch portion of the program Nina STERCKX didn't give a chance to anyone when she went 88-90-93 and won Gold medal. It was an extraordinary accomplishement as this Gold medal was the first Junior World Champion title for Belgium in weightlifting. Second place went to Svitlana SAMULIAK (UKR) who lifted 89kg on her last lift. This was only 2 kgs less than what she lifted at last years World Championships in Tashkent. The Snatch podium was completed by Jamila PANFILOVA (UZB) who lifted 86kg on her last attempt. In Clean&Jerk Juliana KLARISA won Bronze with 103kg (1st attempt). While she tried to lift 105kg and 107kg on her second and third attempts, she wasn't successful in any of them. Second place went to Leila COOK (USA) who at her first International competition already won a Silver medal with 106kg. After her win in Snatch, Nina STERCKX continued to amaze everyone. With her first attempt of 107kg she already won both C&J and Total in the category. She then lifted 111kg and tried 114kg on her last attempt but it was a no lift. In Total, the Snatch podium was repeated: Nina STERCKX (BEL) won with 204kg, Silver was won by Svitlana SAMULIAK (UKR) with 192kg and Jamila PANFILOVA (UZB) finished third with 186kg. Women 55kg Total Podium @IWF/Steve Galvan Men 61kg Category At the last competition of the day the Men 61kg category saw all the Youth World Record holders, Hampton Morris (USA) and Kaan KAHRIMAN (TUR).  In Snatch, Solis DANIEL STIVEN CAICEDO (COL) won his first Bronze medal at his first international competition with 121kg. Silver went to Sergio Massidda (ITA), 2021 IWF Junior World Champion with 125kg and the winner of the category was Kaan KAHRIMAN (TUR) with 126kg. Sadly Sergio after his last Snatch injured himself, therefore he withdraw from the competition. In Clean&Jerk we witnessed the first World Record of the 2022 IWF Junior World Championships by Hampton Morris (USA). He went 3 from 3 with 150-154 and with 160 he broke the Junior World Record of 159 by 1 kg. Solis DANIEL STIVEN CAICEDO (COL) placed 2nd with 146kg, while Minjae CHOI (KOR) - from Group B - won Bronze with 145kg. The Total podium was as follows: Hampton won Gold with 276kg, Silver went to Kaan KAHRIMAN with 269kg, while Solis finished the podium with 267kg. First Day – 2022 IWF Junior World Championships

On the first day of the 2022 IWF Junior World Championships in Heraklion Greece, three A finals were organized, the Women 45kg, the Men 55kg and the Women 49kg categories. Women 45kg category The day and the 2022 IWF Junior World Championships started with the Women 45kg category at 12:00 local time. The event saw 8 athletes competiting for the World Champion titles. In the Snatch portion of the program the Bronze went to Teodora-Luminita HINCU (MDA) with only 1 good attempt of 67kg. THe Silver and Gold medal was contested by 2 athletes, Sharad GARUD HARSHADA from India and Marta GARCIA RINCON from Spain. They both had a good lift on their first attempt, with 64kg and 65kg. On their second attempts Sharad lifted 67kg, while Marta missed her second attempt of 68kg. The Spanish athlete decided to stay with 68kg which she successfuly lifted on her third try and therefore won Silver, while Sharad went and lifted 70kg and won Gold in Snatch. In Clean&Jerk, last years Junior World Champion of the category Cansu BEKTAS (TUR) won Gold with 85kg which she lifted on her third attempt. Two more athletes attempted the same weight however none of them managed to lift it. Snatch Gold medalist Sharad won Silver in C&J with 83kg and Teodora-Luminita HINCU completed the podium with her first lift of 82kg. The Total podium was as follow: Sharad GARUD HARSHADA from India won with 153kg , Silver went to Cansu BEKTAS from Turkey with 150kg and Teodora-Luminita HINCU from Moldova finished third with 149kg. Women 45kg Total Podium @IWF/Steve Galvan Men 55kg Category The second category of the day was the Men 55kg which started at 15:00 local time.  In Snatch, European Junior and Youth Champion, Garnik CHOLAKYAN (ARM) went 3 from 3 and won Gold with 108kg. Silver was won by Jostyn TORRALVO PENALOZA (COL) with his second good attempt of 103kg. He also tried to lift 107kg on his last attempt but sadly injured his elbow during the lift. The last medal of the Snatch went to Jose Manuel POOX PERALTA (MEX) with 103kg which was the same weight as Jostyn lifted but as he lifted it later he could only won the Bronze. In Clean&Jerk, Garik CHOLAKYAN went once again 3 from 3 and won with 132kg. Jose Manuel POOX PERALTA missed Gold with only 1 kg and won Silver with 131kg, lastly Mustafa ERDOGAN clinched the third place with 127kg.  In Total. the podium was exactly the same as in C&J. Garnik CHOLAKYAN (ARM) was the overall winner of the category and won all Snatch, C&J and Total (240kg). Jose Manuel POOX PERALTA (MEX) finished second with a 234kg Total, while Bronze went to Mustafa ERDOGAN (TUR) with 228kg. Men 55kg Total Podium @IWF/Steve Galvan Women 49kg Category The first day concluded with the Women 49kg Category. Among the athletes were Windy Cantika AISAH (INA), Tokyo 2020 Bronze medalist. In Snatch Windy Cantika AISAH didn't give a chance to anyone. When all the others have already finsihed with their lifts, she just only started. She went 77-81-83 and easily won the category. With 83kg, she only lifted 1 kg less than in Tokyo which brought her the Olympic Bronze medal. Silver and Bronze were won by the two athletes from India, Gyaneshwari YADAV won Silver with 73kg and Bronze went to V RITHIKA with 69kg. In Clean&Jerk in the case of the Gold medal, the same result was repeated. Windy Cantika AISAH (INA) went up to 102kg on her second attempt and since she already won with her first lift of 97kg, she declined her last attempt. Silver was won by Gyaneshwari YADAV (IND) with 83kg. Lastly the Bronze went to Maha FAJRESLAM (MAR) with her last attempt of 82kg. In Total the Snatch podium was repeated: Windy Cantika AISAH won with 185kg, Gyaneshwari YADAV got Silver with 156kg and V RITHIKA finished the last podium of the day with 150kg. ITA – IWF Webinar Series // Fifth Webinar – 28 April 2022

IWF appoints Colombia as the host nation for the 2022 IWF Senior World Championships

After a recently concluded bidding process by the IWF, Colombia has been selected as the host nation for the 2022 IWF Senior World Championships. As part of a new process, the IWF had released a call for a hosting opportunity to its member federations to be completed by providing a letter of intent to the IWF. Colombia was one of eight member countries who expressed an interest to host the championship. All the eight countries were asked to make a presentation followed by a Q&A session on Friday the 22nd of April, 2022. The Executive Board had to cast their vote by secret ballot until 18:00 CET on the 23rd of April, 2022 to appoint a new host. Colombia was elected as the new host nation with a majority. The competition will be held in Bogota from the end of November into the beginning of December. Colombia has a long history in weightlifting and has been a true testament of grassroot development of the sport. This is the first time Colombia will be hosting a senior IWF World Championship. Dr Michael Irani, the Interim President for the IWF, stated, “This is a joyous occasion not just for the Colombian Weightlifting Federation, but also the IWF. Colombia has provided a consistent stream of strong weightlifting champions through the years and it brings us immense pleasure to be able to take the IWF Senior World Championships there. Weightlifting has changed the lives of many Colombians and this event will prove to be significant in the growth of the sport within the country.” General Secretary of the IWF, Mohammed Jaloud, concurred and added, “Colombia as the host nation of the World Championships is important for the weightlifting family all around the world. Our vision of an inclusive sport with global presence and the future of this growing sport will be resonated as Bogota takes charge to host the Senior World Championships at the end of the year.” William Peña, President of the Colombian Weightlifting Federation, commented “Sensational news.
