Pawina Thongsuk announces retirement

"I have decided to retire, although I always wanted to compete at these Olympics," Pawina Thongsuk told reporters, with tears running down her face. "It all depended on my physical condition but this injury has affected my consistency and my record."Her retirement was met with disappointment in Thailand, where Pawina, an army sergeant, became an instant celebrity after her gold at the 2004 Athens Olympics. The win sparked celebrations across the country and led to sizable cash bonuses for Pawina, who on her return was paraded through her rural village with a caravan of elephants. A year later, she won three world titles in the 63kg class in Doha and became the first female lifter in over a century to set world records in three different bodyweight categories.She was named 2005 female weightlifter of the year and returned to Doha a year later for theAsian Games. Matthew Curtain appointed as CM for London 2012

Australian Matthew Curtain was appointed as as the Weightlifting Competition Manager for the 2012 LondonOlympic Games. Having been involved in weightlifting over more than twenty years, Matthew Curtain is a well experienced and knowledgeable sport administrator, having served previously as Weightlifting Competition Manager for the XVIII commonwealth Games, Melbourne 2006.He is the current Assistant General Secretary of both the Oceania and Commonwealth Weightlifting Federations. He is the CEO of Australian Weightlifting Federation and will keep his job until being called to join LOCOG. Oceania Championships, the Continental Qualification Event for Beijing Olympic Games, started with the Oceania Weightlifting Federation Electoral Congress. The delegates have elected H.E. Marcus Stephen (NRU) as President, Tony Hole (COK) as 1st Vice President, Ronald Frere (NCL) and Frank Robby (PNG) as Vice Presidents, and re-elected Paul Coffa (AUS) as General Secretary. The Pan-American Championships, at the same time a qualifier for the Beijing Olympic Games 2008, were organised in Callao (Lima), Peru, with a record number of 18 countries participating, including several countries (CAN, COL, CUB, MEX, USA, VEN) which had already qualified at the two Qualification World Championships in 2006 and 2007.
