During the first day of Congress, the IWF membership grew to 187 with the ratification of three new members: Gambia, Laos and Mauritania. Annual Reports were heard and approved and the new Constitution, Technical and Competition Rules were widely debated and approved for 2009-2012. Hosts of the future major Championships and Games gave their preparation reports to the Congress

Weightlifting selected

Nigeria's National Sports Commission has selected seven sports to focus on for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and the 2011 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India. The commission has listed athletics, boxing, table tennis, taekwondo, weightlifting, wrestling and a seventh to be decided

Record number of participation at IWF Congress

Weightlifting sport set up a record by 84 countries's participation In Beijing Olympic Games. Another record was broken at IWF Electoral Congress held in Madrid where 132 countries' delegates are present. The congress was addressed by the letter of Jacques Rogge IOC President. HRH Dona Pilar, HM The King's Sister, IOC Honorary Member on behalf of the hosts welcomed all officials of national federations and IWF.

11th South Asian Games to start in Jan. 2010

The 11th South Asian Games (SAG) is to be held from Jan. 29 to Feb. 8 in 2010 in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. The meeting organized in Kathmandou (Nepal) also decided to include eight more sports in the 11th edition of SAG: badminton, basketball, cricket, judo, volleyball, wrestling, golf and cycling. Besides the eight added branches of sport, another 15 were decided earlier to be on the program. Olympic silver medal weightlifter honoured

Olympian weightlifter Hoang Anh Tuan has been presented with the Labour Order, Second Class, for his contributions to sport after winning silver at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games in the men's 56kg category.Tuan was presented with the State award at a ceremony in Hanoi on March 29 to honour the best sportspeople and disabled athletes of the year. Tuan's 290kg lift won Vietnam's only medal at the Games and he was then selected Vietnam's 2008 athlete of the year. The 24-year-old weightlifter also received a cash-prize of VND100 million at the ceremony, awarded by the Dong Luc Group for his silver medal.
