IWF Anti-Doping Seminar in Cairo

In the framework of the IWF Education Program, started two years ago, the IWF conducted an Anti-Doping Seminar for athletes and coaches in Cairo, in combination with the Youth African Championships, the Qualification Event for the 1st Youth Olympic Games. The Seminar was conducted by Dr. Ágnes Tiszeker, Director of the independent Anti-Doping Group of Hungary, an expert with ample experience in such educational projects. The Seminar was attended by a large number of athletes and their coaches from Africa. This age group, 14-17 years old, is especially targeted by the IWF with its anti-doping education. The IWF has been working hard to disseminate anti-doping information and extended its ADE Program especially to the potential participants of the 1st Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.

Nigeria grabs weightlifting slot

Nigeria has won a ticket to feature in the Youth Olympic Games weightlifting event. At the end of the Youth Olympic Games trials in Egypt , Nigeria won 13 gold, nine silver and 18 bronze medals to place second behind Egypt. The Nigeria Weightlifting Federation Technical Director, Tunde Adedimeji, said the result was possible because the team was predominantly made up of females.  The NWF Secretary, Uche Onwumeh, said both Tosan Bawo (48kg) and Rachael Ekoshoria (58kg) performed beyond expectations while setting new African records in their categories. PWF plans to send squad to Asian Championship

Pakistan Weightlifting Federation (PWF) plans to send seven or eight weightlifters to Jordon in July to feature in the Asian Weightlifting Championship to give them exposure ahead of the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games to be held later this year. "The Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) and the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) had asked for the preparation plans of the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games and we have submitted them accordingly in which we have also disclosed our motive to send a full-fledged squad to Jordon to participate in the Asian Championship to be held at the end of July," the secretary of the PWF Hafiz Imran Butt told ‘The News' on Sunday in an interview. Commonwealth Games will be held in New Delhi from October 3 to 14 while the Asian Games will be organised by China in Guangzhou from November 12-27. Butt said that the Asian Championship would help the boys to test their muscles and temperament ahead of the major event being hosted by India. He said, initially, the PWF had asked for the initiation of the camp in March in connection with the preparations for the coming major events but after the plans could not materialised the federation has now requested the PSB that the camp for the national weightlifters for the said purpose should begin at least from April 1. He added that the weightlifters for the Asian Championship, which would serve as a warm-up event for the Commonwealth Games, would be picked soon after the National Championship - penciled in for March 30-31 in

Fruitful meeting between the WFA leadership and IWF Executive Board officials

On 25th March 2010 a historical meeting was held in Cairo, during the Continental Youth Olympic Qualification Event, in the splendid building of the Egyptian Olympic Committee. The meeting of the Executive Board of the Weightlifting Federation of Africa was joined by some special guests, IWF Executive Board Members, including President Dr. Tamás Aján and General Secretary, Mr. Ma Wenguang.The aim of the joint discussions was to provide the invited IWF guests with an opportunity of close encounter and an insight to the organisation of the African Championships, the management, to meet the African Weightlifting Federation officials and learn about the problems of Africa.In the Press Conference held following the meeting the IWF and WFA leaders emphasized that the discussions focused on the co-operation between the world and the continental organisations and naturally the possibilities and ways of increased support to the African continent were explored and agreed.  

Successful IWF Continental Youth Olympic Qualification Event for Africa

The IWF Continental Youth Olympic Qualification Event for Africa has just finished in Cairo, Egypt. The Egyptian Weightlifting Federation with the leadership of President Dr. Mahmoud Shoukry together with the WFA (Weightlifting Federation of Africa) did a great job and organized an event at a high level. Mr. Khaled Mhalhel, WFA President was proud of the Championships and to have welcomed the high presence of several senior IWF officials, including IWF President Dr. Tamás Aján.Wonderful audience, great lifters, many hardworking people characterized the Event. A significant number of 13 African countries took part with their junior and youth-aged lifters, the latter in the hope of clinching a precious slot for the Singapore Youth Olympic Games this summer.The technical conditions were provided by the IWF TIS staff at World Championships standard.The following National Federations/NOCs qualified for the Youth Olympic Games at the Event: ALG (M), LBA (M), NGR (W), RSA (M), TUN (M+W). EGY already qualified at the Youth World Championships in Thailand 2009 with its men, this time also with its women. Congratulations to all involved!
