2014 Youth Olympic Games Nanjing

Mr. Attila Adamfi, IWF Competition Director recently paid a visit to Nanjing, China in order to proceed to the Technical Visit in preparation of the Youth Olympic Games Nanjing 2014. He was received by the Nanjing 2014 Team and the appointed Competition Manager, Mr. Li Hao. The venue to host Weightlifting competitions will be the Nanjing International Expo Center (NIEC) completed in 2008. The competition venue will also accommodate the weightlifting training providing easy and comfortable solution for athletes and team officials. Fencing, Taekwondo, Boxing and Modern Pentathlon/fencing competitions will also take place at the NIEC. The competition venue has a perfect location, in between the Athletes Village and the Olympic Stadium. The draft Competition Schedule was approved. According to the provisional schedule, the Weightlifting event will kick off on 17 August 2014 – right after the Opening Ceremony of the Youth Olympic Games Nanjing 2014. Athletes kept up the tension in Baku

Women’s 58kg bodyweight category: The Russian lifter ALEEVA Tatiana, European Junior Champion in 2011 and the Albanian lifter BEGAJ Romela, Silver Medallist at the European Championships in 2012 were fighting for the Gold Medal in the women’s 58kg. They closely followed each other and only the last attempts of the Clean and Jerk could decide on the victory. ALEEVA took the Gold with a Total of 207kg. LOCHOWSKA Joanna (POL) ended up third with 15kg less than the Silver Medallist BEGAJ. Men’s 69kg bodyweight category: CHEN Oleg (RUS) came out last for his attempts in the Snatch and in three perfect attempts he gained a 14kg advantage on the next best, BAYRAMOV of Azerbaijan. However, even this great performance wasn’t enough to defeat the two Azerbaijani lifters, GULIYEV Firudin and BAYRAMOV Afgan. Both athletes showed impressive strength and technique in the clean and jerk. The trio taking alternative lifts kept up the tension until the very last moment. The Gold Medal finally went to the 18 year old GULIYEV Firudin, while CHEN Oleg won the Silver leaving BAYRAMOV in the Bronze Medal

New Weightlifting Academy inaugurated in Baku

On the occasion of the IWF Grand Prix Baku International Cup, the Azerbaijan Weightlifting Federation inaugurated a brand new Weightlifting Academy. Besides an impressive competition venue, about 400 seats spectators area and accommodation for training camps, the building offers the possibility to hold theoretical courses. New IWF Grand Prix introduced in Baku, Azerbaijan

The IWF Grand Prix Baku International Cup 14-15 December 2012 was officially opened by Mr. Ismail Ismaylov, Deputy Minister and Azerbaijan Weightlifting Federation Vice-President and Dr. Tamas Ajan, IWF President. Men’s 62kg bodyweight category: The favorite of the competition, Olympic Bronze Medallist HRISTOV Valentin (AZE) won three Gold Medals with a Total of 302kg - 6kg more than what he performed at the London 2012 Olympic Games in the 56kg. Silver Medal went to BAZARBAYEV Umurbek (TKM) who arrived 4th at the 2012 Asian Championships. The second lifter from Azerbaijan, SULEYMANOV Zulfugar won the Bronze Medal with bodyweight lifting 280kg; exactly the same as NAZIF Ferdi (BUL). Women’s 53kg bodyweight category: Another Olympic Bronze Medallist and European Champion in 2012, IOVU Cristina (MDA) managed to grab victory. She came out for her first attempts in the Snatch and in the Clean and Jerk with higher entry than the other competitors; securing her leading position.
