President’s Message

A LOOK BACK ON 2015 – WELCOME TO 2016! Warm and respectful greetings to all members of the World’s Weightlifting Family: Athletes, coaches, Federation officials, the media and the all-important fans of weightlifting! With 2015 we have closed a year that can be classified as highly successful from the point of view of weightlifting. The IWF World Championships in Houston, in Wroclaw (JWC) and in Lima (YWC) were carried out bringing glory to the sport and increasing its popularity. Our sport was a main highlight in the Continental Games and weightlifters excelled also at the various Regional and Continental Championships. Special mention should be given to the appearance of weightlifting at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Apia, Samoa and, once again, the China Grand Prix and the Russian President’s Cup were both characterized by top-level performances. The IWF Masters Weightlifting program carried out significant events on a world scale. Meanwhile, we did not lose focus of the IWF Development and Education Program, a rich and manifold project whereby a series of courses and seminars were held, substantial material aid was handed out at all levels, and the IWF supported the Continental, Regional and national Member Federations with meaningful funds. The IWF’s Anti-Doping Program is – in general estimation by WADA, IOC and other authoritative organisations – one of the best designed and managed amongst all IFs, and feasible success could be recorded in the interest of a clean sport in 2015. Our marketing and promotional efforts have been stepped up and brought practical effects in raising the standard of weightlifting the world over. The activities of the National Federations and of the increasingly important Continental Federations have received greater assistance from the IWF than ever before. Thanks are due to the IWF Executive Board and the officials in the various Committees who have been working hard to guide the sport in the right direction and safeguard its transparency and fairness both in and out of the competition stage. In 2016 we are facing the big challenge of the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. Together with the Organizing Committee, the IWF will do everything in our power and capacity to make weightlifting, a core sport of the Games, one of the greatest highlights of Rio2016! Still on the Road to Rio the five Continental Qualification Events will be significant landmarks and in the rest of the year the Junior and Youth World Championships will also receive the deserved focus and attention. Dear Friends, - while our Calendar and task book is full for 2016, the IWF will carry on with its scheduled Programs and Projects and our relentless fight against doping in the sport. We would not be able to achieve any success, however, without enjoying your continued support and cooperation! So, thank you in advance! To everyone therefore: good luck and a Happy New Year for 2016! Yours, Dr. Tamás Aján IWF President IOC Honorary

IWF Anti-Doping Commission Houston wrap-up

All the Weightlifting World had their eyes on Houston during the World Championships and although the competitions are finished and the lights went out on the platform, the hard work and the fight are not over…for the IWF Anti-Doping Commission (ADC). It was a great World Championship with about 600 athletes and we saw amazing performances. The IWF established a very strict anti-doping program for the 2015 Houston World Championships in order to protect the clean athletes and up to now the laboratories have reported 24 Adverse Analytical Findings from the more than 200 tests carried out. During the elaboration of the Test Distribution Plan of the event, the IWF Anti-Doping Commission carefully analysed the athletes’ profiles based on its extended intelligence network and conducted more target testing than ever before. The targets were based on multiple criteria and the test allocation included the information received from other anti-doping organisations. It must also be emphasized that one of the cornerstones of the IWF’s strict Anti-Doping Program is to use the most competent and best-equipped WADA-accredited laboratories. The analysis of the long term metabolites allows the laboratories and the ADC to detect even the smallest amount of the prohibited substances in the athlete’s body. The testing was conducted in compliance with the WADA Technical Document for Sport Specific Analysis and resulted in two Adverse Analytical Findings of the group S2. PEPTIDE HORMONES, GROWTH FACTORS, RELATED SUBSTANCES AND MIMETICS. The new findings are clear proof how accurate the IWF Anti-Doping Program is. Growth hormone detection is quite new in the field of anti-doping and IWF praises the Montreal Laboratory for its excellent work. The relevant Public Disclosures can be found on the IWF website under Anti-Doping news and following the disclosures no further comments are made until the cases are closed. Naturally, the multiple Adverse Analytical Findings will attract increased media attention but the enormous work behind these findings must also be highlighted!! These AAFs are the clear proof how effective the anti-doping fight in our sport is. The IWF is determined to continue its highly strict program and won’t give up the fight for the honour of the clean athletes. The motto remains: Do it well and let it
