Opening of the IWF Junior World Championships

On the eve of the IWF Junior World Championships, the IWF Marketing Commission welcomed the IWF leadership and the Organizing Committee at a traditional Gala Dinner. The efforts of the Fiji hosts to organize a championship of such measure were widely acclaimed and appreciated by the IWF and its Marketing Commission and sponsors. Next day at the Opening Ceremony, Atma Maharaj, President of Weightlifting Fiji greeted all participants, officials and spectators at the event and expressed his gratitude to Dr Tamas Ajan, IWF President, the Government of Fiji, the members of the Organizing Committee and all stakeholders who helped to bring the Championships together.   Dr Tamas Ajan, IWF President pointed out that he was happy to see the IWFs confidence in Fiji to organize this high priority event in a professional manner now fully confirmed. This tiny island in the Pacific is defying any scepticism. Fiji and the Local Organising Committee under the leadership of Dr Robin Mitchell - President of ANOC and ONOC, IOC Member - is delivering an enjoyable and spectacular event up to the highest standards of the IWF. "In addition to support from the Government, we cannot thank enough to Weightlifting Fiji and its President, Mr Atma Maharaj for his devoted service by living up to the challenge of a world event and thus confirming Fiji as a strong weightlifting nation even in a global context." On behalf of the government of Fiji, Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon. Parveen Bala extended a warm welcome to the representatives of weightlifting from all over the world and expressed that Fiji is extremely proud to host an IWF World Championships for the first time in the Pacific

MASSIDDA (ITA) is Youth and Junior World Champion!

The 2019 Junior World Championships kicked off today in Suva, Fiji with the women's 45kg bodyweight category, a short session where all competitors received medals - as only 3 lifters participated. Vietnamese KHONG My Phuong, silver medallist at this years IWF World Cup grasped the overall (158kg), and the Snatch (74kg) gold medals, while her VIE teammate, second finisher PHAM Dinh Thi, who was Asian Youth Champion last year, managed to take away the Clean and Jerk first place from her, lifting 1kg more than KHONG (85kg). The Turkish lifter, DOGAN Ayse received 3 bronze medals (68, 83, 151). The day continued with the men's 55kg session, where MASSIDDA Sergio (ITA) excelled again, after winning this year's Youth World Championships, he took the Junior World title too. With a 102kg Snatch result, he ended up second in this lift. Clean and Jerk clearly being his strong suit, he came out at 125kg than continued the successful lifts at 128kg and 131kg. His Total result of 233kg secured him a 9kg advantage over Japanese KUBO Kaito (224kg). Another Japanese lifter, YAMAGUCHI Yuto finished in the third place, only one kilogram behind KUBO. His strong performance in the Snatch (103kg) was worthy of a gold medal, but being able to produce only one good lift in the Clean and Jerk at 120kg, he could not cut ahead of KUBO in Total.    

Executive Board Members welcomed by the President of Republic of Fiji

The International Weightlifting Federation held its Executive Board meeting 30-31 May in Suva, Fiji, prior to the Junior World Championships starting this Saturday. On the first day of the meeting, Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konusi Konrote President of the Republic of Fiji honoured the occasion with his presence and warmly welcomed the Executive Board Members and the whole Weightlifting Family in the country. His Excellency and  Dr Tamas Ajan IWF President took part in a traditional Fijian ceremony, Sevusevu, that is usually held prior to prestigious events and to honour respected visitors. The Executive Board dedicated a 2-days meeting to the deliberation of the IWF Constitution and By-Laws. Recognising the importance of this fundamental document in the IWF’s activities and in order to further improve its governance, the Board worked through a Draft prepared by a Working Group specially appointed to this task. The recommended changes are based on the modification proposals collected from the Member Federations and officials of the Federation. The Board’s deliberations and considerations were effectively assisted by the IWF’s legal advisor Me Francois Carrard who also worked on the document aligning it to best international practices and the requirements of Swiss Law. The most recent Guidelines of the IOC are also reflected in the articles and By-Laws to be updated in due course. After this first review, the Draft document will require further study and consideration in several steps before being finally presented to the Member Federations who are to vote on the new Constitution and

Tokyo 2020 first Qualification period is over

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games first Qualification period was over on 30 April 2019, and all results are now published in the Qualification database. All together 15 Qualification Events were organised spread on all Continents, between 1 November 2018 and 30 April 2019: - 5 Gold level, - 8 Silver level, - 2 Bronze level. 2148 results achieved by 1319 athletes (703 men and 616 women) from 120 countries are included in the Qualification database. To provide more information, the data presentation has been enhanced: the points considered for the ranking (best results from each period and next best result) are highlighted in green. According to the Tokyo 2020 Qualification System, nations with clean doping history will have more quota possibilities. In order to provide full transparency and to assist in the planning, the list of countries with 10 or more Anti-Doping Rule Violations (ADRV) between the start date of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games period and the end of the Tokyo 2020 qualification period is also published. Visit at KMG International by IWF President

Dr Tamas Ajan IWF President paid a visit to the headquarters of KMG International in Bucharest Romania last week upon the invitation of the CEO of the company, Zhanat Tussupbekov who also holds the titles of IWF Vice President, and Marketing Commission Chairman. A detailed presentation was held about the activities of the company, which is one of Europe’s largest stakeholders in the oil industry with increasing turnover annually. Dr Ajan and Mr Tussupbekov also used the opportunity to review the co-operation between the IWF and KMG International in the past 3 years and discussed potential cooperation between IWF and KMGI in the future.  The Marketing Commission Chairman and the President also had a fruitful consultation about the potential improvement of the IWF marketing activities. The two parties had a detailed conversation about the situation of Kazakh weightlifting and the President expressed his satisfaction on the progress the Weightlifting Federation of the Republic of Kazakhstan made in the fight against doping. Kazakh Weightlifting will continue to work towards achieving clean weightlifting in the country by fully aligning itself to the IWFs strict Anti-Doping Policy and
