Roundup of the 2019 IWF Junior World Championships

The 2019 IWF Junior World Championships took place in the capital of the beautiful country of Fiji, 1-8 June and now it has been successfully concluded. The national television of Fiji was present with 6 cameras for domestic live television broadcasting while streaming with professional commentary was available all around the world. The tiny island on the Pacific defied all skepticism, and despite not having prior experience in organizing a weightlifting World Championships, Fiji and the Local Organising Committee under the leadership of Dr. Robin Mitchell, President of ANOC and ONOC, IOC Member; delivered this Gold Level Olympic qualification event in the most professional manner. “In addition to support from the Government, we cannot thank enough to Weightlifting Fiji and its President, Mr. Atma Maharaj for his devoted service by living up to the challenge of a world event and thus confirming Fiji as a strong weightlifting nation even in a global context.” - Dr Tamas Ajan All the participants, including the athletes, officials, and dignitaries found the event spectacular and highly enjoyable. Chinese Weightlifting Association President Mr. Zhou Jinqiang attributed much of his team’s success to the forethought of the Organizing Committee. “They’ve provided us and all of the teams with very good accommodation and transportation,” he said. “That’s why we have good results.” Emphasizing the importance of this championship in the life of Fiji, the President of Fiji, Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konusi Konrote attended the event and demonstrated the warmest hospitality to the weightlifting family. “Fiji is proud to host this important event and the Fijians are doing their best to make everybody feel at home. Never before have so many countries been represented at a sports event in Fiji,” The event was included in the “Voices of the Athletes” Schools Program, which meant students from 12 Fiji schools had the chance to witness an event of this size. Weightlifting Fiji, under the leadership of Atma Maharaj, expects to spark further interest in weightlifting. “We want to be able to set up new high-performance centers in our country,”  Mr. Maharaj said. “We want to be able to propel the sport even further.”   IWF has chosen NYE Katherine Elizabeth (USA) and OPELOGE Don (SAM) for the Best Lifters of the JWC. NYE won the women's 71kg bodyweight category with a whopping 36kg advantage over the second finisher, while OPELOGE excelled in men's 89kg category, winning the first gold medal for Samoa on a Junior World Championships. In total, 235 athletes participated, 105 women and 130 men from 41 countries. At the women, China won the medal tally (11,1,0), followed by KAZ (6,0,0) and VIE (3,3,0). At the men, Uzbekistan had the most medals (6,0,0) then EGY (3,0,0) and IRI (2,4,9). The favorable results of the IWF’s serious Anti-Doping program and Education, providing a level playing field for all, were clearly visible at this Championships: countries with no World Championships gold medal record now stepped forward like Samoa and New Zealand! The Junior World Championships closed with several Youth World Records

The 2019 IWF Junior World Championships concluded today with the men's +109kg session with several Youth World Records taken by Iranian athlete, YOUSEFI Alireza. LALAYAN Varazdat won the overall gold and became the tenth Armenian in the heavyweight category to win the World Champion title (419kg). In the Snatch, DAVOUDI Ali (IRI)  cut ahead of LALAYAN and stole the gold medal from him with a 193kg lift. YOUSEFI was fourth in this lift, but set new Youth World Records twice, first at 163kg, which he immediately bettered to 171kg. The Armenian lifter bested the rest in the Clean and Jerk (227kg), jumping on the top of the Total scoreboard, having a final result of 419kg, one kilogram more than DAVOUDI, who won the gold medal last year. The 15-year-old Iranian who is already a Youth Olympic champion pinched the Clean and Jerk silver medal, setting other 4 new World Records along the way. The President of Republic visited the JWC and learned about weightlifting

Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konusi Konrote President of the Republic of Fiji paid a visit to the Junior World Championships held in the FMF Gymnasium, Suva. His Excellency, who enjoys tremendous popularity all over the country, arrived at the competition with the First Lady and was acquainted with the weightlifting competition, starting from the warmup hall, where he learned about the two lifts, the tactics and the process of the competition. While the couple was watching the competition, they received further explanations from Dr Tamas Ajan and Pyrros Dymas, multiple Olympic Champion. After the victory ceremony, in which the President personally took part, he hosted a dinner for IWF dignitaries. "Fiji is proud to host this important event and the Fijians are doing their best to make everybody feel at home. Never before have so many countries been represented at a sports event in Fiji," said Mr Konrote to Dr Tamas Ajan, IWF President.

Korea finally earned gold

On the last competition day of the 2019 Junior World Championships in Suva, in the women's +87kg, LEE Seon Mi (KOR) was expected to win three gold medals but she found a surprising challenger in the Snatch. Last year's Junior World Champion, LEE came out on a relatively high starting weight, 120kg and missed her first two attempts, but finally, managed to perform a 123kg good lift, jumping to the second place. Samoan STOWERS Feagaiga, a champion of the 2018 Commonwealth Games, excelled in the Snatch, with three good lifts, finishing at 124kg, took the gold medal. BENITEZ RIVERA Ashamarie (USA) clinched the Snatch bronze medal for lifting 108kg. LEE cut ahead of the Samoan in the Clean and Jerk. Lifting two kilograms more (153kg) than her competitor, she rounded up her Total result to 276kg. DALALAYAN Arpine was the third runner up in the Clean and Jerk with 140kg. The 2019 Spanish Championships kicks off today!

The Spanish Championships takes place this weekend in the Municipal Pavilion "Miguel Guillén Pim" in Madrid. The event kicks off today with the men's competitions and will be divided into two competition turns. The morning session will start at 8.40AM while the afternoon session at 4.10PM local time. On Sunday, the 9th of June, the women's sessions start at 8.40AM and 2.10PM.
