Successful Technical Visit to 2018 IWF WWC in Ashgabat

A delegation composed of Attila Ádámfi, Director General, Anikó Németh-Móra, Director of International Relations, Mátyás Lencsér, Competition Manager and Angélique Mottet, Operations Manager completed a Technical Visit to Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, host of the 2018 IWF World Championships. With their Turkmen partners, the IWF team inspected all the potential venues of competition, training and accommodation and selected the sites to be used for the Championships. The probable competition dates (10 days for the 20 bodyweight categories) are 1st to 10th November, with the meetings and Congress to take place prior. In addition to detailed discussions with the Weightlifting Federation's President Berdinyyaz Myatiyev and General Secretary Charygeldi Mammedov, as well as with the Olympic Committee and its General Secretary Azat Muradov, the IWF representatives were received at the highest level by Turkmenistan's newly appointed Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs Dayanc Gulgeldiyev who also gave his and the Government's guarantees to their determination to host a top-level and large-scale event in the capital city. The World Championships will be compact event with all venues and hotels in walking distance. Training Course in Barbados

Barbados Amateur Weightlifting Association hosted its first ever training course for technical officials with the funds of IWF. Instructed by Ms. Gabriella Mathe, 17 participants were formally introduced to the technical rules and regulations governing Olympic weightlifting as long with the roles and responsibilities of the officials. In addition, due to the support of Olympic Solidarity BAWA has organized an introductory coaching course, instructed by Mr. Andras Szabo with 25 participants. After the educational courses BAWA hosted the second edition of the Phillips & Springer Classic, in conjunction with the Barbados Olympic Association. All three events were enthusiastically received by participants and spectators. Participants, under the continued guidance of Ms. Mathe and Mr. Szabo, used the knowledge gained at the courses on the day of the competition. This contributed greatly to the improved execution of the event. Indeed, Mr. David Colon-Arroyo, who served as announcer at the competition also made this observation when he compared this year’s event to last year’s which was the first competition held in Barbados in 44 years. Beijing 2008 Results Corrected for Chinese Taipei Weightlifters

On January 25, the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee held an Olympic Medals Ceremony to celebrate the corrections for two medalists at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games - Ms. Chen Wei-ling and Ms. Lu Ying-chi. Both athletes were awarded bronze medals in Beijing, but were upgraded at the end of 2017 following the several disqualifications for doping violations. Chen and Lu were presented with the medals by IOC Member Mr. C. K. Wu in accordance with the IOC protocol for Olympic medal ceremonies. Chen received the gold medal and Lu the silver for their weight categories. The overall medal count for the Chinese Taipei delegation at the Beijing Olympics is now 5 gold, 7 silver and 20 bronze. The event was witnessed by Mr. Te-Fu Lin, Director General of Sports Administration and Ministry of Education; Mr. Hong-Dow Lin, President of Chinese Taipei NOC; Ms. Jacqueline Yi-Ting Shen, Secretary General of Chinese Taipei NOC; and Ms. Hsia-Ling Tai, former Minister of Sports Affairs Council, the Executive Yuan.
