Joanne Calvino, British Champion joins UKAD

Olympic and Commonwealth medal winners are amongst athletes appointed to the UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) Athlete Commission as it seeks to strengthen the athlete voice within anti-doping. Besides Jo Calvino, multiple British Weightlifting Champion; Olympic skeleton medallist Laura Deas, 50m backstroke world record holder Liam Tancock, and ex Gloucester Rugby Football Club second-row James Hudson are the athletes joining the Commission for an initial two-year term. The appointments come a month after the inaugural World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Global Athlete Forum, at which athletes, including UKAD Athlete Commission members Ali Jawad and Callum Skinner, called for a stronger athlete voice within anti-doping. “James, Jo, Laura and Liam were successfully appointed onto the Commission because of their diverse experiences as top-level athletes, and their passion for anti-doping. I think all four of them will bring their own networks and ideas to the Commission and I look forward to working with them.” - UKAD Athlete Commission Chair, Sarah Winckless MBE Source: ukad.org.uk — Follow IWF: Facebook Instagram Twitter

IWF acknowledges IOC Decision, and reiterates commitment to clean sport

The IWF today expressed its surprise at the IOC Executive Board (EB)’s decision to continue the conditional nature of weightlifting’s inclusion for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games programme, but maintains its ongoing commitment to implementing robust anti-doping measures in order to protect clean weightlifters. The IWF had been confident weightlifting would be reinstated given it has fulfilled all the criteria set by the IOC Executive Board in December 2017. The IWF is honoured to be praised by the IOC for the excellent work, positive steps and strong initiatives over the last seven months. The IWF has implemented all the recommendations of the Independent Clean Sport Commission and the IWF Sport Programme Commission, including the introduction of a new Anti-Doping Policy, and has secured WADA compliance. However, following a review of the IWF’s report, the IOC EB took the decision to maintain weightlifting’s status in Paris 2024 pending a review of the outcome of the measures the IWF has already implemented. The IWF’s commitment to protecting clean athletes goes beyond compliance and the IWF has also implemented a number of measures in addition to the IOC’s stated requirements. The IWF has introduced a new Qualification System designed to reward nations with a history of clean weightlifting, which has drawn praise from the IOC. The IWF has also focused on education in order to change cultures and was involved in several education seminars for suspended nations with a high incidence of doping. The IWF recently partnered with USA Weightlifting and USADA to provide worldwide anti-doping education to weightlifters. Positive outcomes of the measures already implemented by the IWF can already be inferred from recent competition results, notably the success of countries like the USA at the recent IWF Junior World Championships in Tashkent. IWF President Tamas Ajan said: “We respect the IOC’s decision and our commitment to ensuring clean sport remains as strong as ever. We will continue to work closely in partnership with the IOC and WADA to ensure a clean competition for weightlifters. “We are very proud of the excellent progress we have made in such a short period of time and we are already seeing the positive outcome of the measures we have implemented. Cultures in countries with high historical incidences of doping will not change overnight, but we are moving in the right direction and were pleased the IOC acknowledged this. The IWF has sent out a very clear message that doping will not be tolerated. We are confident that the IOC will be satisfied by the positive outcome of the measures we have introduced with their approval, and we are grateful to have the support and partnership of the IOC in ensuring that clean competition for

IWF, USA Weightlifting and USADA team to educate athletes globally

The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), USA Weightlifting (USAW) and the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) are combining resources to provide anti-doping education to weightlifting athletes around the globe.  A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the three entities to launch a new Learning Management System in time for compulsory use at the 2018 IWF World Championships, to be held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, November 1-10. “The IWF’s complete commitment to clean competition means we continue to seek new and even more effective ways of carrying out every aspect of anti-doping work: from testing to whereabouts, from the mandatory registration of athlete support personnel to education,” said IWF President Tamas Ajan. “I am very happy that the IWF has been able to make this new agreement with USA Weightlifting and with USADA. It will help us take a big step forward together in developing and maintaining a culture of clean sport throughout weightlifting.” USADA will provide its world-leading educational tutorials specific to weightlifting as the basis for the courses which are required in order to participate at the World Championships. “Requiring anti-doping education to global athletes helps move the sport forward,” said Travis T. Tygart, CEO of USADA. “We firmly believe in a comprehensive approach to anti-doping that effectively combines education, prevention and detection. After working with the IWF to deliver a successful anti-doping programme at the 2017 IWF World Championships, we are confident that effective education will contribute to a cleaner sport globally.” USA Weightlifting will coordinate production of the new online education platform, leveraging its experience of implementing policies that require athletes to complete anti-doping training prior to competing at national events. “The world of weightlifting is a big family,” said USAW CEO Phil Andrews. “We may compete fiercely with others on the world stage, but at the same time we firmly believe in working together so that the whole family does well. We’re grateful for the confidence the IWF has shown us in helping to prepare the new online education system. And we’re confident our colleagues around the world will find the new education tools a great and practical benefit.” — Follow IWF: Facebook Instagram Twitter

Iranian Davoudi won the superheavyweight

2016 Youth World Champion DAVOUDI Ali (IRI) had no challenger for the Junior World Champion title in the Men’s +105kg bodyweight category. He came out at 181kg, 187kg and 192kg all good lifts, finishing with an amazing 15kg advantage over LALAYAN Varazdat (ARM), Silver Medallist at the 2016 European Youth Championships. It proved to be impossible to get close to DAVOUDI in the Snatch. Bronze Medallist BUTT Muhammad Nooh Dastgir (PAK) made it to 171kg. DAVOUDI had two good lifts in the Clean and Jerk at 221kg and 227kg lift, but his third attempt at 235kg proved to be too much for him. He still won the Gold Medal in the Total with 419kg, 20kg ahead of LAYALAN. Third in the Clean and Jerk with 222kg, LAYALAN had a Total of 399kg just like BUTT.
