Amirul (MAS) Won 2007/2008 Pahang Top Sports Awards

Weightlifter Amirul Hamizan and track athlete K. Ganthimathi have been adjudged Pahang sportsman and sportswoman for 2007/2008, respectively. They received RM3,500 cash, a certificate and a trophy each from the Tengku Mahkota of Pahang, Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, Kuantan last night. Amirul is currently ranked third in Southeast Asia and 16th in the world. He had won two gold and one silver medals at the Pahang Open Championship 2007, occupied the 16th position in the 56kg category of the 2007 World Weightlifting Championship in Thailand, fourth position at the 2007 Korat Sea Games, won the silver medal at the 2008 Asian Championships in Japan and took the eighth position at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Gill asks Kalmadi to clear doping mess

New Delhi - Sports Minister M S Gill today (16 Nov.) asked Indian Olympic Association President Suresh Kalmadi to clear the doping mess involving the weightlifters. "Gill called Kalmadi this morning and discussed the doping issue. The Minister told Kalmadi to clear the mess Indian weightlifting finds itself in," sports ministry sources told PTI. Earlier this morning, Gill lashed out at the Indian Weightlifting Federation, saying the Indian WF owed an explanation and an apology to the country for the dope scandals that may invite a third international ban. In a strongly worded speech he delivered at the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan Sports Meet here, Gill said IWF (Indian Weightlifting Federation) officials need to explain how six lifters returned positive for banned substances in WADA tests. "Recently, a number of weightlifters tested positive for banned substances. That has brought shame to the country and Indian Weightlifting Federation is facing international punishment.

PWLF courses begin

Pakistan Weightlifting Federation (PWLF) is organizing weightlifting coaching and technical course in collaboration with International Olympic Committee (IOC) at PSB Sports Center from from Monday, 16. Nov. Qamar Iftikhar, an IOC Solidarity weightlifting coaching diploma holder from Hungary, will supervise this course. Hafiz Imran Butt, General Secretary, PWLF will help Qamar conduct the course. Around twenty selected coaches and technical officials from Sindh Province are expected to attend the course. Two sessions of two hours each would be conducted every day. The coaching and training course is scheduled to conclude on 20th November.

Olympic Medal Winner To Present At IRFU Fitness Workshop – Introduction to Weightlifting Workshop

The aim of the workshop is to introduce the coach to the area of weightlifting. The main presenter on the day will be Martin Zawieja, an excellent coach who has won Olympic bronze medal in the past for Germany (1988 Seoul). He will also be assisted by Colin Buckley from the Irish Amateur Weightlifting Association and Des Ryan (IRFU Fitness Education Manager). This course is suitable for people who have never used or coached the Olympic lifts before or coaches who have completed a course and would like a reminder.Title - Introduction to Weightlifting Workshop Date - December 6, 2009 Time - 9am to 2.30pm Venue - Tipperary Insitutie (Thurlus)
