Tomorrow is the kick off of the XIV Pacific Games

Starting from tomorrow, Noumea, New Caledonia will be hosting the biggest Pacific Games ever held. The Opening Ceremony of the XIV Pacific Games is set for Saturday August 27th at 7pm. The Games will be televised live to quite a few countries around the world. The President of the French Republic, Nicolas Sarkozy, will officially open the Games. The weightlifting event will be one of the highlights of the Games. World class lifters like Dika Toua (PNG), Ele Opeloge (Samoa), Yukio Peter (Nauru), Manuel Minginfel (FSM) Manueli Tulo (Fiji) Itte Detenamo (Nauru) and many others will take centre stage on September 5-7. 8th Indian Ocean Island Games

The Seychelles; a little paradise in the middle of the Indian Ocean welcomed the 8th Indian Ocean Island Games which ran from August 5-14. The Weightlifting event took place at the prestigious International Conference Centre in Victoria with 63 participating athletes (28 Women and 35 Men). Lifters from 5 countries competed and outstanding conditions were provided by the organizers. As expected, Seychelles dominated the medal ranking with 30 Gold Medals ahead of Madagascar (6 Gold Medals), Mauritius (5 Gold Medals) and The Reunion (4 Gold Medals). It was a great honour for the organizers and the participants that the President of the Republic of Seychelles, Mr. James Michel attended the weightlifting competitions. He was delighted to see the high level of the event, and he was proud that his country excelled in this sport. Community Development, Youth, Sports and Culture Minister, Mr. Vincent Meriton said that the athletes' performances and results surpassed the Games' organizing committee's expectations. Seychelles won a record-breaking 57 Gold Medals, 24 Silver and 36 Bronze in the 12 sporting disciplines in the Games, beating the previous highest gold-medal haul of 43 won in Mauritius in 2003. High sporting value coupled with festival atmosphere mark Shenzhen Universiade

Weightlifting continues to display both a high athletic value and a happy and youthful "being together" atmosphere at the 2011 Universiade in Shenzhen. Among the champions we find lifters from the host nation, China, of course, but also from Indonesia, Armenia, Russia, Thailand or Chinese Taipei. Activities in and outside the venues abound and offer entertainment and friendship opportunities to the participants.  Volunteers abound in tens of thousands and perform their jobs at "academic level".
