Oceania event concluded in Fiji

The successful event included seminars and meetings beside the competitions of the Oceania Championships - also serving as Continental Qualification Event for 2016 Rio Olympic Games. The activities in Suva, capital of Fiji started with the OWF Technical Seminar on 22 - 23 May, funded by the IWF. Described as the best ever Technical Seminar, Garry Marshall, OWF, and Sam Coffa, IWF Technical Committee Chairman gave lectures to more than 30 participants coming from 16 countries, including several women. On 23 May, the OWF Executive Board meeting was held with the participation of the IWF President and IWF Executive Board members. The OWF Electoral Congress on 24 May was opened by Mr. Laisenia Bale Tuitubou, Minister of Sports of Fiji, with a traditional Fijian cultural show. The Congress elected the following officials for 2016 - 2020: Marcus Stephen (NRU), President Paul Coffa (AUS), General Secretary Jerry Wallwork (SAM), First Vice President Luisa Peters (COK), Vice President - first ever elected female official Garry Marshall (NZL), Vice President Frank Robby (PNG), Vice President Manuel Minginfel (FSM), Executive Board member Kokoria Iabeta (KIR), Executive Board member Phillipe Maunder (AUS), Executive Board member The Congress also appointed the Chairperson of the following Committees: Dr. Lisimoni Kami (TGA), Medical Lawrie Townsend, (AUS), Masters Garry Marshall (NZL), Technical Lilly Coffa (AUS), Women The elections took place in the presence of IWF officials: President Dr. Tamas Ajan, Vice Presidents Sam Coffa, Jose Quinones, Poh Eng Ong, EB Members Jaloud Al-Shamari, Antonio Urso and Attila Adamfi, Director General. Sam Coffa, IWF Vice President received OWF Honorary Life Membership. The 2017 Oceania Championships was awarded to Gold Coast (AUS), that will be organized in conjunction with the 2017 Commonwealth Championships. The event might serve also as the Test Event for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. In the afternoon, the IWF Anti-Doping Seminar was held where participants received latest information about anti-doping activities from Jude Ellis, IWF expert from NZL. The Seminar was fully funded by the IWF as part of the IWF Development program. The Oceania Championships was opened by the President of Republic of Fiji, HE Jioji Konousi Konrote accompanied by IWF and OWF Presidents. Exciting competitions for the African quota places in Cameroon

The African Championships, Qualification Event for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games concluded last week in the capital of Cameroon, Yaoundé. Around 100 lifters from 13 countries competed for the 5 Men and 4 Women quota places available. Pre-Games operational meetings for IFs

The IOC organized in Lausanne a series of meeting with all International Federations in order to coordinate common operational issues ahead of Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Pedro Meloni, Rio 2016 Weightlifting Sport Manager and Attila Adamfi, IWF Director General paid a visit to the ZKC factory to check the sport equipment production for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. The International Weightlifting Federation has received the Candidature of five Candidate cities bidding to host the 2018 IWF Junior World Championships. IWF Executive Board members visit USA Weightlifting Championships/ US Olympic Team Trials

3 times Olympic Champion, Mr. Pyrros Dimas and IWF Women's Commission Chair, MS Moira Lassen, both IWF Executive Board members visited Salt Lake City, Utah on the weekend to open the US Olympic Team Trials. The USA Weightlifting Federation also hosted multiple "meet and greet" opportunities with Mr. Dimas for athletes and coaches alike. Mr. Dimas declared the Olympic Trials open while Ms. Lassen wished the athletes and coaches the best for the competition.
