World Cup opens in Samoa

In an Opening Ceremony held in fantastic Pacific atmosphere and in a packed hall, Samoa's President of State opened the IWF World Cup in Apia. An event that is included in the Olympic Qualifiation ranking, the World Cup welcomes participants from all over the world and dignitaries from the IWF and Continental Federations. Right on the first day of competition, LIAO Hui (CHN) set a new junior clean and jerk world record in 69kg with 190kg: the very first world record established in the Pacific Region - including ALL sports. London 2012 Sports Director visits IWF

With the aim to co-ordinate plans with the IWF for the weightlifting events of the 2012 Olympic Games in London, LOCOG Director of Sport , Ms. Debbie Jevans, accompanied by Mr. David Luckes, Head of Sport Competition, paid a short visit to Budapest on Thursday, 22 November. The London officials were met by Dr. Tamás Aján, IWF President. Although the Olympic Games in Great Britain are still 5 years ahead, the President and the Director both said that only such frequent contacts and a friendly co-operation between Organising Committee and International Federation on all important issues in the lead-up to the Games might guarantee the success of the sport in the

IWF Director appointed to FISU

The FISU Executive Committee appointed Hungarian Anikó Németh-Móra, Director of the IWF, as Chairperson for Weightlifting in the World University Championships International Technical Commission. Mrs. Németh has attended and assisted in the organisation of all the ten University World Cups held so far since 1998. She will act for the term of 2007 - 2011 as the main technical delegate of FISU World University Weightlifting Championships and co-operate with the Commission comprising 32 sports on the FISU World Championships
