Manueli Tulo lifts top sports award in Fiji

  Young weightlifter Manueli Tulo was named the 2008 Fiji Sportsman of the Year at the Sports Awards Night last week held in Suva, Fiji.Tulo,  aged 18, of Levuka,  Fiji ,  won gold at the Commonwealth Youth Games  held in Pune, India last October in the 56kg Category.  Tulo was not able to receive his award personally as he trains at the Oceania Weightlifting Institute in New Caledonia .  This is the first time that a weightlifter has won this prestigious sports award in Fiji .  Normally the sport of rugby dominates this category.  The guest speaker at this event was Mr. Kevan Gosper,  IOC member and past IOC Vice President.   Mr. Gosper is the President of the Oceania National Olympic

This year the Lao Weightlifting Federation was established and the IWF Executive Board approved the affiliation of the LWF. The President of the Federation is Lt. Col. Thansamay Kommasith. He is working with three Vice Presidents and five Members of the Presidium. The General Secretary is Mr. Bounsaleumsay Khennavong. The headquarters are in Vientiane. 37th European Union Championships

The Championships organized in Ciechanow (Poland) brought a great success for the home team as they won four women and four men categories. The Spanish team gathered three gold medals (two by women, one by men). Other Gold medal winning nations: women: France, men: Greece(2),  Latvia Marzena Karpinska (Poland) and Issac Morillas (Spain) Best on Points 25 women and 36 men participated in the Championships. New EU records were set by Ewa Mizdal (Poland) in the 69 kg category with 116 kg in the clean and jerk, Damian Wisniewski (Poland) in the 62 kg category with 123 kg in the snatch and Issac Morillas (Spain) with 167 kg in the clean and jerk of the 69 kg category. The best lifters on points were Marzema Karpinska in the women's event with 252 points and Issac Morillas in the men's with 398.2 points. Games glory propels sports stars to celebrity list

Sports stars are riding the crest of a successful Beijing Olympics to increasingly captivate the Chinese imagination and media attention, with more athletes appearing on this year's Forbes China list of the top 100 celebrities. Twenty-two athletes made their way into the line-up this year, up from 18 last year and 17 in 2007, Forbes China reported. NBA star Yao Ming topped the list with the most media exposure and the highest pre-tax annual income of 357 million yuan ($52 million). Other Olympic stars, such as gymnasts Yang Wei, Zou Kai and Li Xiaopeng, as well as table tennis player Ma Lin, weightlifter Chen Xiexia and diver Wu Minxia, made their debut in the list this year.
