It will be Bucharest (Romania) hosting the 90th edition (22nd for female) of European Weightlifting Championships, from the 3rd to the 12th of April 2009.
After the great success of Beijing Olympic Games, the great champions of Weightlifting Sport on the continental platform come back. Numbers are so high: 250 athletes from 35 participant Nations.
The event is going to be held in the “Sala Polivalenta” Bucharest, a multifunctional structure with 5 thousands spectators capacity and a dedicated area for the Warm Up and for the Training Area. As usual, during the competitions only Eleiko Barbells will be used.
All participants will be accommodated in Bucharest’s Rin Grand Hotel.
To introduce the eight-days of competitions, on Sunday April the 5th, there will be the challenges of Women 58kg B Group at 11 o’clock a.m. and Men 56kg B Group at 12.30 a.m. At 15.30, with the Opening Ceremony it will be officially lead off the 2009 European Weightlifting Championships. Competitions will go on till Sunday April the 12th when, as usual, at 13 o’clock, there will be the spectacular +105kg male category competition that will end the event.
2009 is an important year for European Weightlifting Federation (EWF). Bucharest’s Championships, in fact, will represent the best way to celebrate the 40th Foundation’s anniversary.
During the event merit certificates will be awarded to the nine centenarian European Federations that have offered an on-going and constant activity in time in Weigthlifting Sport.
EWF’s President, Mr Antonio Urso, with a speech of his own will go back over the Federation’s history in order to remember to all those present how much EWF has carried out until now in Weightlifting field.
The big absent will be the Olympic Champ for the +105kg category, German Matthias Steiner. The battle in this category would be among the Ukranian Ihor Shymechko and the two Russian Evgeny Pisarev and Igor Lukanin.
2009 is an important year also for the Romanian Weightlifting Federation as after so many years it has been given the opportunity to host two great Weightlifting International events: between April the 3rd and 12th there will be the European Championships and two months later the Junior World Championships (June 12th-21st).
