Competitions started in Penang at the 1st IWF Continental Clubs Grand Prix

The Welcome dinner of the 1st IWF Continental Clubs Grand Prix was attended by numerous dignitaries of Malaysia and the International Weightlifting leaders, including Sam Coffa, Vice President, Ong Poh Eng, Executive Board Member and Paul Coffa, Oceania and Commonwealth Federations’ General Secretary. „For Malaysia hosting this prestigious weightlifting event is a great honour,” said The Right Honorable Chief Minister of Penang Mr. Lin Guan Eng, when addressing the participants of the welcome dinner. Madame Yang Berhmormat Lydia Ong Kok Fooi, State Minister for Penang Youth and Sports also emphasized: “Penang is proud to host the inaugural IWF Continental Clubs Grand Prix and we definitely regard it as a dress rehearsal for the 2011 Junior World Championships we shall be hosting here next June.” The Honorable Vinson Detenamo, President of the Commonwealth Weightlifting Federation and En. Zafarul Akbar bin Haji Kassin, President of the Malaysian Weightlifting Federation were also in attendance. The Matahari Ballroom of the Equatorial Hotel was decorated beautifully and the organizers staged a wonderful folk dancing show involving the audience during the 8- course delicious dinner. The competitions started yesterday for about 100 weightlifters out of 20 countries who are competing in the 1st Intercontinental Clubs Grand Prix. Each Club came with the determination of winning the competition at the Penang International Sports Arena. IWF Development Program in Thailand

Under the IWF Development Program in the category of Regional Training Center, Thailand will organize an international workshop to be held December 16-20 in Cholburee. Instructors from Korea, China and Thailand will coordinate the theory class training that is targeting to welcome over 50 career coaches from around the world. Regional Course in Tata, Hungary

In the framework of the IWF Development Program, a course was held on Friday November 26 in Tata, Hungary. During the Opening Ceremony, the President of the Hungarian Weightlifting Federation, Mr. Imre Dobos said an inaugural speech and welcomed the IWF delegates and all participants. The administrative seminar gave useful information about the IWF's organization and functioning. It dealt with numerous topics useful for National Federations such as anti-doping issues and procedures, recent rule modifications and the 2012 London Olympic Qualification System.Besides Hungarian coaches and athletes, several delegates from Serbia and Slovakia also participated in the course. 4 years ban for an Anti-Doping Code violation!

The IWF is the only Olympic sport – according to the recent meeting of the WADA Executive Board – that has established the 4 year ban for the first violation of its Anti-Doping Code. Since its introduction – for over 2 years – of such strict sanctions, in over 40 cases athletes received the 4 year ban.
