The details of the 2011 IWF Development Program are published

The IWF continues supporting the National and Continental/Regional Federations in 2011 in the framework of the IWF Development Program. We are delighted that the IWF Member National Federations as well as the Continental and Regional Federations have the possibility again to develop their organizational, coaching, training, educational and anti-doping activities or improve in any other areas they might feel need for, with the assistance of the IWF. IOC and UN reaffirm commitment to development through sport

The President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Jacques Rogge, welcomed United Nations (UN) Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to the IOC headquarters in Lausanne, where the two leaders reviewed the joint activities that the organisations had put in place in 2010 and reaffirmed their commitment to a number of upcoming initiatives using sport as a tool for peace, education and development. By using sport as a tool for change, the IOC and its partners have implemented various activities across the globe in fields such as humanitarian assistance, peace-building, education, gender equality, the environment and the fight against HIV/AIDS. Among upcoming projects are the joint efforts that will be deployed to find solutions to ease access of Palestinian and Israeli athletes to sporting competitions and the adoption by the UN of the Olympic Truce Resolution for the London 2012 Olympic Games. Cyclones hit Oceania region

Cyclones also hit the island of Vanuatu and New Caledonia.  Fortunately there were no human casualties but flash flooding caused enormous damage.  The Oceania Weightlifting Institute was closed for a few days due to the institute being flooded.  Water at one stage at the Institute was almost one metre high.  The Institute is built very near to a small river and with massive rain and cyclone winds; the river rose and flooded everywhere.  Last weekend another cyclone hit the island of Samoa; fortunately there was no human

Unprecedented weather caused tragedy in Australia

Unprecedented weather has caused drastic loss and devastation in the Oceania region.  The floods which have devastated the state of Queensland in Australia have also come with the tragedy of losing two members of the weightlifting family in Australia.  On the 10th January, Steve and Sandra Matthews were swept away in tragic circumstances as a result of flash flooding.  Both of them were members of the Toowoomba Weightlifting Association.  Steve was a competitor, official and volunteer representing both Queensland and Australia as a Masters athlete. At the 2010 Toowoomba Weightlifting Association annual awards function, Steve Matthews was named as the Toowoomba Weightlifting Association Club Member of the Year.
