8th Indian Ocean Island Games

The Seychelles; a little paradise in the middle of the Indian Ocean welcomed the 8th Indian Ocean Island Games which ran from August 5-14. The Weightlifting event took place at the prestigious International Conference Centre in Victoria with 63 participating athletes (28 Women and 35 Men). Lifters from 5 countries competed and outstanding conditions were provided by the organizers. As expected, Seychelles dominated the medal ranking with 30 Gold Medals ahead of Madagascar (6 Gold Medals), Mauritius (5 Gold Medals) and The Reunion (4 Gold Medals). It was a great honour for the organizers and the participants that the President of the Republic of Seychelles, Mr. James Michel attended the weightlifting competitions. He was delighted to see the high level of the event, and he was proud that his country excelled in this sport. Community Development, Youth, Sports and Culture Minister, Mr. Vincent Meriton said that the athletes' performances and results surpassed the Games' organizing committee's expectations. Seychelles won a record-breaking 57 Gold Medals, 24 Silver and 36 Bronze in the 12 sporting disciplines in the Games, beating the previous highest gold-medal haul of 43 won in Mauritius in 2003. High sporting value coupled with festival atmosphere mark Shenzhen Universiade

Weightlifting continues to display both a high athletic value and a happy and youthful "being together" atmosphere at the 2011 Universiade in Shenzhen. Among the champions we find lifters from the host nation, China, of course, but also from Indonesia, Armenia, Russia, Thailand or Chinese Taipei. Activities in and outside the venues abound and offer entertainment and friendship opportunities to the participants.  Volunteers abound in tens of thousands and perform their jobs at "academic level". 50th Birthday of Yurik Sarkisyan

Olympic Silver Medallist in 1980, World and European Weightlifting Champion Yurik Sarkisyan celebrated his 50th birthday at the Continental restaurant in Yerevan on Sunday 14th August. During the party, Sarkisyan lifted a bar in front of the guests. His birthday cake also had the shape of a barbell. Olympic Gold Medallist and several times World Champion Yurik Vardanyan also attended the party. Yurik Sarkisyan is a Member of the IWF Weightlifting Hall of Fame. He lives in Australia since 1994 and pays visits to his homeland Armenia regularly. He received a congratulatory message and a Certificate of Honor from Serzh Sargsyan, President of Armenia. Weightlifters reward Shenzhen’s splendid Universiade with outstanding performance

Halfway into the weightlifting competitions at the 26th Summer Universiade in Shenzhen, China, weightlifting performances astonish all visitors and organisers. Competitors coming from all the five continents bring a high lifting standard on the stage of the Complex Training Hall of Shenzhen Sports School. The lineups in both the men's and the women's categories feature some former World Championship medal winners and University World Champions. The host nation China already boasts three Universiade Champions, but Indonesia has also won two categories alongside PRK and ARM. Both the host public and the FISU Family and visitors are impressed by the dynamism and the excitement that weightlifting has brought to the Universiade program.
