IWF Post-Olympic testing

The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) following the London Olympic Games continued the extensive range of doping controls around the world in close cooperation with National Weightlifting Federations (NFs) and National Anti-Doping Agencies (NADOs). The IWF was the first to introduce the steroid profiling and the latest methods elaborated by the WADA Accredited Laboratory in Cologne (GER) are being applied for the detection of anabolic steroids. It is unfortunate that amongst the many countries where In-and Out-of-Competition controls took place in the past months, a large number of positive cases concern Turkish lifters. The positive findings can also be attributed to the cooperation of the Turkish Weightlifting Federation and to the new analytical methods of the Cologne laboratory. The result management is still in process therefore none of the cases are closed yet. In 2012 the IWF carried out over 2,000 anti-doping controls in more than 120 countries around the world including 800 Out-of-Competition controls and over 1,200 In-Competition controls. Education is a vital and efficient tool to fight against doping in sport. Elections in the Austrian Weightlifting Federation

The Austrian Weightlifting Federation held their election for the period 2013 to 2016 on 19th January 2013. Gerhard Peya is the new President, further Executive Board members are Gottfried Langthaler (Vice-President), Robert Horacek (Treasurer), Dipl.-Ing.Andreas Degwerth (Secretary), Katharina Rimböck-Peya (Referee Chairwoman), Markus Koch (Public Relation Manager), Ludwig Schadler, Ewald Fischer and Christian Kathrein (Vice Sport Directors), Manfred Modrey (Masters Chairman).

Meeting with the IPF President

On Friday, 18th January a delegation from the International Powerlifting Federation, led by the IPF President Gaston Parage, visited Budapest for a meeting with the IWF President,  Dr. Tamás Aján. Mr. Gaston Parage is also the General Secretary of the Luxembourg Weightlifting Federation. Background of this visit in the beautiful City of Budapest was to inform Dr. Aján, who is  Honorary Member of the IOC, regarding the IPF application for IOC recognition. The IPF Secretary General, Emanuel Scheiber, who is responsible for the application, described Dr. Aján the current status quo of the IPF application. Mr. Parage and the IPF Treasurer, Mr. Dietmar Wolf could also add some important items. Dr. Ajan spoke with appreciation about the work of the IPF, especially in Anti Doping and also about how the IPF is handling the contact to the member federations and  new member applicants. Dr. Aján will support a closer cooperation between the IPF and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) in which Powerlifting (Bench Press) is already included in the program. For the future all participants of the meeting agreed to have a closer cooperation between the IWF & the IPF and that it is important to continue with an annual meeting of both "brother" Federations.  The IPF Delegation was accompanied by the Hungarian Powerlifting Federation President, Mr. András Rónaszéki and Mr. Miklós Fekete from the IPF

New Albanian Federation leadership visits IWF

The newly elected Albanian Weightlifting Federation leadership paid a visit to the IWF Secretariat and were received by the IWF President at his office. AWF President Mr Elez Gjoza and the new Secretary, Mr Muharrem Berisha came to exchange information regarding a future co-operation with the IWF, with special focus on the 2013 European Championships which Albania is about to host. The Federation leaders were accompanied by Acad. Gudar Beqiraj, former President of the Federation, now its Honorary President, and currently the President of the Academy of Sciences of Albania. IWF calls for Technical Official nominations to 2013 Events

The IWF is calling its Member Federations to send their nominations for Technical Officials for selection at the four major events in 2013. Nominations for the following worldwide events: 2013 IWF Youth World Championships (Tashkent, UZB) 2013 IWF Junior World Championships (Lima, PER) 2013 Summer Universiade (Kazan, RUS) 2013 IWF World Championships (Warsaw, POL) must be forwarded on one Nomination Form - downloadable from this website - by 15 February
