World Records Fall in the Women’s 49kg

There was a tense competition between four lifters, two Thai and two Chinese in the women’s 49kg bodyweight category. Rio 2016 Olympic Champion and 2017 World Champion TANASAN Sopita (THA) took the lead in the Snatch. With three good lifts she secured a Gold Medal setting the new World Record at 93kg. HUO Zhihui (CHN) ended with the same result in the Snatch. She missed one attempt at 92kg. Her compatriot (still Junior) JIANG Huihuan ended up third, setting a Junior World Record with her 87kg first attempt. JIANG made it a good lift with her second attempt at 90kg as well as the third at 92kg. TANASAN missed her last attempt at 109kg. Her last secured lift was 108kg landing her forth in both the Clean and Jerk and in the Total. „I am happy with today’s result. I did not expect any more or less” – she said following the competition. PRAMONGKHOL Chayuttra (THA) proved to be undefeatable in the Clean and Jerk. She only came out twice hitting the highest numbers. Going for 115kg and 120kg, she defeated the HUO Zhihui. The Chinese lifter came up second in both the Clean and Jerk and in the Total (208kg). PRAMONGKHOL Chayuttra (THA) set two World Records - to 120kg in the Clean and Jerk and to 209 in the Total while winning the Gold. Bronze Medal also went to China as JIANG Huihua ended with 206kg. She set 7 Junior World Records in this single event, beating her own World Record with every lift.

IWF Education Seminar in Ashgabat

 In the framework of the IWF Education Program, a seminar was held in Ashgabat on 3 November, in conjunction with the World Championships. Mr. Maged Salama, coaching expert gave a successful lecture on best practices for coaches when determining the timing and yearly planning of training. Participants were extremely active, during and after the lesson questions of athletes and coaches regarding of recovery, nutrition and training intensity were answered. As a second topic, participants heard a detailed explanation of the whereabouts, its importance, process of submission, whereabouts failures and last but not least what to do in case of technical problems. Moreover, the new iLiftClean - Anti-Doping Education Course was presented. On this e-learning platform, athletes can watch 3 videos about Whereabouts obligation of the Athlete, Doping Control Process and Rules of Therapeutic Use Exemption. After completing a short test, the ones who successfully solve the quiz, receive an IWF certificate, valid for one year after the day of completion. All athletes participating at the WWC 2018 shall compete the iLiftClean E-Learning Anti-doping Course. At the end of the seminar, the athletes had the opportunity to do the iLiftClean Course with the help of the IWF staff. IWF Statement – Women’s 45kg bodyweight category

Due to consecutive mistakes made by the coach and some Technical Officials in the Women’s 45kg bodyweight category at the second attempt in the Clean and Jerk (104kg) of DZHUMABAYEVA Yulduz (TKM), the International Weightlifting Federation arranged a meeting with the Technical Officials involved. Following discussions, and in order not to harm the athlete’s achievement, a unanimous decision was taken that the second Clean and Jerk attempt (104kg) was accepted as good lift. Six Medallists in the men’s 55kg

Today in the men’s 55kg, OM Yun Chol (PRK) added three Gold Medals to his collection after winning the 2013, 2014 and 2015 World Championships (56kg). With a 120kg Snatch, a 162kg Clean and Jerk and a Total of 282kg, he had no opponent in the field and set the first Senior World Record in the Clean and Jerk. OM had a huge, 34kg advantage over silver medalist CHONTEY Arli (258kg) from Kazakhstan, who managed to lift 120kg in the Snatch, same as OM Yun Chol, but only finished sixth in the Clean and Jerk (138kg). Despite being only fifth in both the Snatch and the Clean and Jerk, SCARANTINO Mirco (ITA) won the Bronze Medal in Total (252kg). “Because it was so hard to win this year's European Championships, I didn’t think I could achieve a medal here in Ashgabat. I am extreamly happy with my result” – SCARANTINO said after the Medal Ceremony. There are two lifters missing their attempts in the Snatch but winning medals in the Clean and Jerk afterwards. Silver Medallist with 142kg LAI Gia Thanh (VIE) and one kilogram behind him, Thai CHOMCHUEN Teerapat. Besides a Senior World Records, Youth World Records were also set by Bulgarian RUSEV Angel Hriskov and CHOMCHUEN Teerapat (THA). The two 17 years old lifters challenged each other during the competition. First, RUSEV set the new Youth World Record in the Snatch to 108kg, then to 135kg in the Clean and Jerk - he almost immediately raised it to 140kg. Also Youth World Record in the Total with 248kg. CHOMCHUEN took back his World Record in the Clean and Jerk two times, setting a 136kg one and - responding to RUSEV's 140kg lift - a 141kg Clean and Jerk. Thai Gold and Silver, Venezuelan World Record

The first and the second place were both earned by the Thai lifters in the 45kg women bodyweight category on the World Championships in Ashgabat. SUKCHAROEN Thunya, second at the 2017 World Championships and two times Junior World Champion was the most confident in each lifts. She won the Snatch with 80kg, the Clean and Jerk with 106kg and the Total with 186kg. „I feel exhausted but relieved. It was the first time in this new bodyweight category, and I had to lose a lot of weight to fit in, but my hard work paid off” - SUKCHAROEN said. Her compatriot, NANTHAWONG Chiraphan (THA), this year's Junior World Champion claimed three silver medals (76kg,95kg, 171kg). DZHUMABAYEVA Yulduz (TKM) finished third with a Total of 169kg, to become the second woman from Turkmenistan to finish on the podium at the World Championships after SHERMETOVA Kristina in the women's 53kg in 2017.
