IOC Activity Report on Anti-Doping

On 17 February, the IOC announced that new analyses carried out on the doping samples collected at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin to detect the presence of Continuous Erythropoietin Receptor Activator (CERA) had come back negative. In addition, all tests carried out at the Winter YOG in Innsbruck were also negative. Over 300 urine and blood samples were analysed by WADA-accredited laboratory in Seibersdorf (Austria). The World Anti-Doping Agency recently launched a “Say NO! To Doping” video clip as the latest element in its awareness campaign. This campaign underlines the fundamental messages of sport: courage, respect, effort and to accept challenges. To date, 16 organisations throughout the world have accepted this campaign, including the UK Anti-Doping Agency and

2012 Social Science Target Research Grant Program

WADA invites applications for its 2012 Social Science Target Research Grant Program no later than 30 April 2012 on the following topic: "Why do athletes say no to doping?" The overarching body of literature available to date concerning the risk and protective factors tends to focus on why athletes would give in to doping. However, in order to develop education programs further and provide the target population with positive messages on anti-doping, it is important to find out what incentives the athletes see in not doping. We are starting to understand the risk factors and vulnerabilities, but the reasons for athletes who do or who do not want to give in to doping, are not necessarily the exact opposites. Furthermore, anti-doping education, prevention and awareness rely on three major themes to discourage doping behaviors: the negative health consequences, the cheating aspect and the possibility of being caught. All of these themes constitute risks, and many athletes are prepared to take those risks for different reasons. By exposing the reasons which give incentives to athletes not to dope (“what’s in it for me not to dope?”), we could not only provide athletes with genuine choices as regards decisions to dope, but we would also be able to develop a fun and lighter approach to anti-doping education. For further information on WADA's Social Science Target Research Program and to consult the Applications Guidelines, please click here. Applications must be submitted by e-mail to [email protected]. All projects responding to the terms and conditions of this call for proposals will be evaluated by external peer-reviewers, whose recommendations will be reviewed by the Education Committee. Applicants will be notified of the results at the end of June 2012. WADA will only fund projects it deems appropriate. Please note that the maximum funding available for this project is US$

Review of the World Anti-Doping Code

Montreal, February 15, 2012 Dear WADA Stakeholder, As you will be aware, the Code Review Process commenced on 28 November, 2011. Correspondence was sent to all stakeholders informing them of the review and drafting process that will continue over the next two years, with three rounds of consultation and culminating in the World Conference in Johannesburg, South Africa in November 2013. Please be reminded that the submission deadline for the 1st Consultation Phase is March 15, 2012. By sharing your practical experiences with the Code via WADAConnect, you can provide WADA with constructive feedback which will enable WADA to make enhancements to the Code that will benefit the fight against doping in sport. All stakeholders are urged to consider their practical experiences in providing suggestions for any amendments. In view of the relatively successful harmonious operation to date, we suggest you look carefully at areas which will benefit from change, additions or omissions, and reflect on the benefits to the global community of athletes arising from any suggested alteration. If you have not already done so, please take the time to create a user account with the consultation platform using the user-friendly guide found here. You may then provide your comments, directly referencing the relevant Code Articles that are of particular interest to you. We look forward to hearing from you soon in this 1st Consultation Phase and working with you to promote doping free sport and enhancing the Code. Yours sincerely, John Fahey AC

IWF Anti-Doping Policy working group

Dr. Tamas Ajan, IWF President following his statement on the IWF Congress at the 2011 IWF World Championships Paris, France, called an expert meeting in Budapest in order to launch the review process of the IWF Anti-Doping Policy. Experts such as the IOC Medical Director, WADA Legal Director and WADA European Regional Office and International Federations Relations Director took part in the meeting along with other specialists from international organizations and from the IWF. The participants agreed that the involvement of RADOs (Regional Anti-Doping Organizations) and NADOs (National Anti-Doping Organizations) are indispensible to aim the further improvement of the IWF Anti-Doping Program. The fruitful collaboration of the working group will allow the amendment of the IWF Policy to run simultaneously with the modification of the IWF Constitution. IOC and WADA experts are strongly convinced that the IWF’s strong approach and dedication in the fight against doping is an exceptional example to follow among IFs and demonstrates how to be efficient, compliant and proactive in this challenging
