2013 Russian President’s Cup Results

After a first edition held in Belgorod and a second edition in St. Petersburg; the 2013 Russian President’s Cup moved to Moscow. Weightlifters from 3 continents and 14 countries competed on the platform. Besides World, Continental Champions, Olympic Medallists also tried to grab victory. A new World Record was set in the Total with 334kg by Tatiana Kashirina (RUS) in the Women’s -+75kg bodyweight category. Commonwealth Weightlifting Federation appoints new President

23 November 2013 | Penang, Malaysia As a result of the casual vacancy created by the recent resignation of Hon. Vinson Detenamo (NRU) as President of the Commonwealth Weightlifting Federation (CWF), the Executive Board has, in line with the article 7.4 of the constitution appointed a new President until the CWF Electoral Congress is held in Glasgow on 29 July 2014. Accordingly, the Executive Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Malaysian, Dato Ong Poh Eng as the new President of the Commonwealth Weightlifting Federation. Having been elected Vice President in 2006, Dato Ong Poh Eng is a well-respected Sports Executive with over twenty years’ experience in delivering international events, managing National Federation affairs and holding public office. Presently, Dato Ong Poh Eng also serves as Vice President of the International Weightlifting Federation, President of the Malaysian Weightlifting Federation and was Chairman of the 2011 Junior World Championships Organising Committee. His other positions within the public sector include; President of the Penang Weightlifting Association, President of the Penang Swimming Association, Vice President of the Malaysian Body-Building Federation, President of the Penang Body-Building Association, Vice President of the Malaysian Ballroom Dancing Federation, Chairman of the Penang Water Sports Centre, President of the Penang Muay Thai Association and Executive Board Member of the Penang Golf Club. ‘With a unique blend of leadership attributes, extensive sporting knowledge and a bespoke understanding of international diplomacy, Dato Ong Poh Eng is an outstanding official who has demonstrated a selfless contribution towards the advancement of sport over many years’ said Paul Coffa, CWF General Secretary.

WFA Coaching Course

The WFA held a Coaching Course from 5-10 November 2013. The course was conducted by: Aveenash Pandoo, National Coach and WFA Coaching and Research Committee, Prof. Abdurrazag Shakshuki From the faculty of medicine of the Tripoli University and Dr. Jelitti Khedija from the ANAD of Tunis and also practitioner in the field of sports medicine. The course was very productive and informative in the sense that the course was run looking at modern way and systems to improve the performance of the African Weightlifters. The participants engaged in very well and were guided in the right direction. Dr Jellitti brought to the coaches the topics of Anti-doping and the topic was thoroughly covered and the coaches have been explained very clearly about the do’s and don’ts. Moreover, Dr Jellitti handled the topic of psychology and how to mentally prepare the lifters for competition and training. Dr Shakshuki brought the topics of Injuries in weightlifting and how to deal with them and also the alternatives to doping. Mr Aveenash Pandoo brought to the attention of the coaches the importance of correct techniques development, a view on long term athlete development and the benefit of it, the development of force, the planning of training program, the importance of constant evaluation and methods in selecting weightlifters. We would like to thank the WFA for their effort, commitment, the IWF for continuous support and funding, and all the coaches assisting and contributing in making a success of this course. A few key areas were identified as problems areas and will be addressed very closely within the development section of the continent. FISU gives 2016 University Worlds to Mexico

  The FISU Executive Committee, at its meeting in Brussels, on November 9th 2013, attributed the organisation of the 5th World University Championships 2016 to Mexico. Although the event is officially attributed to the Mexican Student Sport Organisation, the Mexican Weightlifting Federation and its President Mr. Alvarado Rosalio del Angel must be congratulated also for the initiative and the contribution to this successful bid. After 2008 Komotini (GRE), 2010 Taichung (TPE), 2012 Eilat (ISR) and 2014 Chiangmai (THA), this will be the first World University Weightlifting Championships under FISU to be organised in Pan-America.
