2019 Asian Youth & Junior Weightlifting Championships

This years edition of the Asian Youth & Junior Weightlifting Championships takes place on 19-27 October in Pyongyang, DPR Korea. At the Youth event, an equal number of women and men athletes will participate, 51 respectively, while the Junior events will see 126 weightlifters (53 women, 73 men). Kate Nye Awarded Best Of September for team USA

The United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee today announced that standout performances from triple jumper Christian Taylor (Fayetteville, Georgia), weightlifter Kate Nye (Oakland Township, Michigan) and the U.S. mixed 4x400-meter track and field team earned them Best of September honors for Team USA Awards presented by Dow. Making her debut at the senior world championships at age 20, Nye swept the women’s 71 kg. division. She became the youngest U.S. women’s world weightlifting champion, earning gold in the snatch (112 kg.), clean & jerk (136 kg.) and total (248 kg.). Her snatch of 112 kg. broke five records: junior world, senior Pan American, junior Pan American, senior American and junior American, in her final year of junior eligibility. Her total of 248 kg. also set an American record. Having won the junior world championships in July, she is now the reigning junior and senior world champion. About the Team USA Awards Each National Governing Body may nominate one female, one male and one team per discipline. An internal nominating committee selects five nominees from both the male and female categories, and three from the team category to advance to the voting round. Votes received from NGB representatives and select members of the media account for 50% of the final tally, with the other half determined by online fan voting via TeamUSA.org/Awards. Soruce: USA

The Lima Grand Prix will be one of the highlights of the IWF calendar getting closer to the end of 2019, 8-10 November and will take place at Coliseum Eduardo Dibos in Lima. The competition is organized by the Peruvian Federation with International Weightlifting Federation and Government support. The Grand Prix is an invitational event, the Top 12 athletes in the IWF World Ranking (as of 30 June 2019) in each bodyweight category, plus the first South American located in said ranking, additionally, 1 athlete from Peru and 2 invited athletes at the discretion of the Organizing Committee (OC) will have the chance to compete for money prizes. The event is also a Silver Level Qualification Event for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Happy Birthday Pyrros Dimas!

Pyrros Dimas, three times Olympic Champion and the most decorated weightlifter ever, celebrates his birthday today! He won his first Olympic Gold in 1992 for Greece in the 82,5kg bodyweight category, then was crowned again at the Olympics in 1996 and 2000. In 2004, he added an Olympic Bronze to his collection, becoming one of the very few who participated on 4 consecutive Olympic Games. He became Member of the IWF Hall of Fame in 2009. We wish happy birthday to the living legend, Pyrros Dimas!

CNMI Weightlifting Federation to select student for special training in New Caledonia

THE CNMI Weightlifting Federation is seeking a student participant for the Oceania Talent Identification Program or OTIP, which aims to create interest in weightlifting among Pacific Island youth. John Davis, federation president, said he will personally select a CNMI student, 11 to 17 years old, to participate in this year’s OTIP. He said the student doesn’t have to be “perfect” but he or she will be selected based on his or her lifting ability, coordination, and form. The selected student will attend a special training camp at the Oceania Weightlifting Institute in New Caledonia from Dec. 1 to 8. Besides a free plane ticket, the student will also receive free meals and accommodation as well as complimentary internal transportation and an Oceania Institute T-shirt in New Caledonia. Davis said he has communicated with public school principals about the training program, adding that anyone in the private schools who may be interested should contact him as soon as possible.
