New Youth World Record for Egypt – 2022 IWF Youth World Championships

The fifth day here in León Mexico featured the Women 64kg, the Men 89kg and Women 71kg categories. In the Men 89kg we could witness an extraordinary perfomance from an Egyptian athlete which brought him the Gold and a Youth World Record.

Women 64kg Category

In the Women 64kg category there was a clear distinction between the first placed athlete and the rest of them. 

In Snatch Ingrid Vanesa SEGURA GRUESO (COL) only started her lifts when the rest of the athletes have already finished.She went 3-from-3 with 87-91-94kg and easily won Gold. Silver went to Nadezhada LI (KAZ) with 85kg, while Keily Carolina SILVA FERNANDEZ (VEN) completed the podium with 84kg.

In the Clean&Jerk we witnessed a medal from Group B for the second time at this Youth World Championships, when Brianna MARQUEZ (USA) took Bronze with 105kg. Her teammate Anna SIERRA finished second with just 1kg more, with 106kg. Then came Segura, who after her Gold in Snatch, went 3-from-3 again and with the difference of 11kg collected her second Gold medal of the day.

The Total podium followed the Snatch one, Segura was awarded Youth World Champion with 211kg, Li finished second with 190kg, while Silva won Bronze with 187kg.

Men 89kg Category

This category brought the second new Youth World Record of the Championships when Mahmoud Hosny Elsayed HASSAN from Egypt broke the C&J Youth World Record.

In all the disciplines the podium stayed the same. Carlos Enrique LEON AVELLA from Venezuela collected 3 Bronze medals with 125-155-280, while Nikoloz ESARTIA from Georgia won Silver with 141-174-315. The clear winner of the category was Mahmoud Hassan who not only won 3 Gold medals with 150-193-343, he also broke the C&J Youth World Record. On his second attempt he lifted 175kg and then with his team they decided to jump to 193kg which was a new World Record attempt. Much to the excitement the crowd he executed the lift perfectly and broke the record.

Women 71kg Category

In Snatch the competition was really close between the athletes who made a podium finish. Janette YLISOINI from Finland placed at 3rd place with her 2nd attempt of 89kg, Ildem Burcu GERCEKDEN from Turkey took Silver with 91kg and with Mia RHODES (USA) lifting 92kg on her last attempt, USA collected ist first Gold medal of the Championships.

In C&J portion of the program Rhodes proved to be the strongest and with her third lift of 110kg won the competition. Ylisoini finished at 2nd place with 106kg. On her third attempt she tried 111kg however it was a no lift. Ivanna Gabriela CERQUERA MONTOYA even though she placed 7th in Snatch, was strong enough to lift 104kg in C&J, which earned her the Bronze medal.

In Total, Mia Rhodes collected her third Gold medal with 202kg, Ylisoini placed 2nd with 195kg, and Gercekden completed the podium with 194kg.
