Last Continental Olympic Qualification Event started in Samoa

The impressive Opening Ceremony of the Oceania Championships – Continental Olympic Qualification Event & Commonwealth Championships was held with the participation of Tuilaepa Lupesoliai Sailele Malielegaoi, Samoa's Prime Minister Hon. Marcus Stephen, OWF President and Dr. Tamas Ajan, IWF President who officially opened the competition. The attention now turned to the Tuanaimato Sports Complex – venue where the competitions are held – which also hosted the 2007 IWF World Cup. IWF meeting in preparation of the Nanjing 2014 YOG

In the framework of SportAccord, the IWF President Dr. Tamas Ajan and Competition Director Attila Adamfi held a fruitful meeting with the Nanjing 2014 YOG Deputy Director, Sports and Venues and Head of Sport Competition Department. In order to enforce and maintain a close collaboration, the IWF suggested extending the Competition Schedule to a 6 day period. Key operational issues were also discussed, and a proposal was made to relocate the Training Venue as close as possible to the Competition

Education Seminar in Apia, Samoa

In the framework of the IWF Development Program, a coaching, technical, administrative, athlete education and medical seminar was held in Samoa prior to the Oceania Championships - Continental Olympic Qualification Event & Commonwealth Championships. On the technical side Sam Coffa from Australia and Garry Marshall from New Zealand held lectures. In coaching related topics Lyn Jones from Australia gave information. Athlete education was conducted by Mike Keelan from Australia and the medical seminar was conducted by Dr. Moni Kami from Tonga. From the IWF, the Competition Director, Attila Adamfi also gave lectures. The cultural assimilation seminar was conducted by Trent Dabwido from Nauru. Matthew Curtain, LOCOG Weightlifting Manager gave updated information in regard to the London Olympic Games. A special session was dedicated to ADAMS. Samoa is Ready

Samoa is ready to host one of the biggest weightlifting events ever held in the Pacific. The 2012 Oceania & Commonwealth Senior, Junior and Youth Championships will take place in Apia from Wednesday 6th to Saturday 9th June. The Oceania Electoral Congress was held today at the Samoa Convention Centre. Dr. Tamas Ajan received the title „Honorary Life President of the OWF” for his contribution as founder. Paul Wallwork, previous OWF President became Life Member. Hon. Marcus Stephen (NRU) was reelected as President. Paul Coffa (AUS) was reelected as General Secretary. 1st Vice President: Jerry Wallwork (SAM) Vice Presidents: Frank Robby (PNG) Samuel Pera (COK) Executive Board Members: Kokoria Iabeta (KIR) Manuel Minginfel (FSM) Phil Maunder (AUS) Matthew Curtain (AUS) was reappointed as Assistant General Secretary This event is fully supported by the Government of Samoa and coincides with the 50th Anniversary of Samoa’s Independence. The whole country of Samoa will be in a celebration and festive mood all of next week. 211 athletes from 24 NFs will compete during the event. Read the OWF Newsletter

IOC Sports for Hope – Zambia and Haiti

Lausanne, June 1st 2012 The IOC held a meeting in for International Federations, dedicated to the 1st Olympic Youth Development Center (OYDC) built in Zambia in 2010 and to a second Center to be opened in Haiti in 2013. 24 IFs representatives, including the IWF, were invited to participate in the meeting where apart from the IOC General Director, Mr. Christophe De Kepper and Sports Director, Mr. Christophe Dubi was also present along with the President of the Olympic Committee of Zambia and Haiti, the Director of the OYDC of Zambia and certain notable experts who were working on the creation of the first Center and are currently working on the second one. The IWF last year donated 12 sets of training barbell, 6 training platforms and other weightlifting equipments to the OYDC of Zambia and will support the OYDC of Haiti as well. The efforts of the international sporting community were welcomed and appreciated by the IOC and the IFs were further encouraged to continue supporting the Center in
