The most decorated Olympic athlete in the history of weightlifting, three times Olympic Champion plus once bronze-medal winner Greek hero Pyrros Dimas celebrates his birthday today! Born in the Albanian city of Himara from Greek parents, Dimas devoted himself to the sport of weightlifting while only aged 11. He started competing at 14 and won his first Albanian champion title in 1989 at the age of 18. He became 4th at the European Championships in 1990 in the Danish city of Aalborg. The tremendous success and glorious path followed shortly after. He won his first Olympic Gold in 1992 for Greece in the 82,5kg bodyweight category. Coming home from the Barcelona Olympic Games he was acclaimed by a crowd of 60 thousand Greek supporters as National Hero. In 1996 he once again got a Gold this time in the 83kg bodyweight category while in 2000 he won in the 85kg. His name became history as he even stands out from the list of three times Olympic Champions (Naim Suleymanoglu, Kakhi Kakhiashvili, Halil Mutlu) as he added an Olympic Bronze to his collection at the 2004 Olympic Games held in Athens. This breathtaking way to end his career remains in every weightlifting lovers’ memory. He became Member of the IWF Weightlifting Hall of Fame in 2009 and was also President of the Greek Weightlifting Federation pursuing a political career as well. His personal best is 180,5kg in the Snatch, 215kg in the Clean and Jerk and 392,5kg in the Total. Happy Birthday Pyrros

IWF Coaching Course in Uganda

Weightlifting Federation of Uganda organized a Coaching Course in Kampala, 1-5 October 2017, thanks to their application within the framework of the IWF Development Program submitted at the beginning of the year. Lectures were given by Milan Mihajlovic, IWF Technical Committee Member with the assistance of more than 15 participants. The organization was at a very high level, while all conditions were above standard to enable the participants to get the best out of the knowledge given by the course. William Frederick Blick, President of Uganda Olympic Committee and Salim Musoke, President of Uganda Weightlifting Federation opened the Course at the Grand Imperial Hotel. Media representatives from Uganda present during the theoretical and practical lessons as well. The last day included round table discussions where the National Weightlifting Coach of Uganda and the Course director discussed with the participants how to develop weightlifting in the country. Many ideas were presented and a significant highlight was put on the construction of a national training center paired with a continuous education of trainers. Besides the organization of the course, the Uganda Weightlifting Federation management put tremendous efforts into the preparation of the African Championships. AWF Extraordinary Electoral Meeting

The Asian Weightlifting Federation (AWF) held an extraordinary Electoral meeting in Bangkok, Thailand on 7th October 2017 in presence of IWF President Dr. Tamas Ajan. Considering the vacant position of AWF General Secretary in view of Mr. Mohammed Jalood (IRQ) elected as IWF General Secretary, the following people got elected according to the AWF Constitution: General Secretary: Mrs. Boossaba Yodbangtoey (THA) 1st Vice President: Mr. Mohammed Jalood (IRQ) Vice President: Mr. Birendra Prasad Baishya (IND) Executive Board Member: Mr.Mohammed Alharbi (KSA) Mrs. Boossaba Yodbangtoey was the only female candidate for the General Secretary position.  She showed her passion and personally strong leadership; and received full support from the AWF family after all other candidatures were withdrawn for this position.  Mohammed Jalood became 1st Vice President while all other candidatures were withdrawn for this position as well.  Birendra Prasad Baishya became the new AWF Vice President and Mohammed Alharbi AWF Executive Board. Social Responsibility project by the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Weightlifting Federation

Earlier this year the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Weightlifting Federation (TTOWF) put forward a proposal to the Youth Corrections Service. The idea was to provide a rigorous program of weightlifting to those who were among the most underprivileged in society. The aim is to create a regime of training and study that will lead to vocational qualifications for anyone who partakes and completes the course. The Federation believes that these partnerships can make a significant contribution to society. The young male participants will have, in a relatively short space of time, acquired skills and experience making them more suitable as potential employees in the sport of weightlifting and fitness industry. TTOWF had set up a training program with one of the instructors to oversee the curriculum that they had implement at the Youth Training Centre. TTOWF President, Laura Denise Ramsay-Overall and TTOWF General Secretary, Laurence C. Carbon were the coaches during this training day at the Youth Training Centre. They introduced weightlifting for the participants through different specific tasks, for example loading the barbell according to the given totals, who can hold an overhead squat for the longest. At the end of the day all men taking part in this program were satisfied and valued this project. The next part will be early next year to follow up on their progress.
