2007 Royal WWC preparations in progress

Peruvian hosts celebrate first ever gold medal and team victory

On days Two, Three and Four of the 10th University World Cup, the medal distribution became more colorful as the neighbouring nations, USA, further Asians and Turkey also joined the line of winners in Peru. Meanwhile, Chinese men and women towered over their respective categories, wherever entered.The last day (12th August) with the two superheavyweight classes, saw even a junior world record attempt - hardly missed - by ZHANG Zheng (CHN), at 169kg in clean and jerk. As the ultimate success of the event, the Women's Team Trophy was retained by the home country, thanks to the even and excellent performance of the Peruvian girls. Among the Men, China came into the top position with USA and PER following. Chinese students sweep all categories on first day in 2007 UWC

University World Cup opens in Lima

36 years after the last Weightlifting World Championships held in Lima, a total of 128 weightlifters are expected to participate in the University World Cup, running from 9th to 12th of August in Callao, next to the Peruvian capital. Weightlifting mourns Dr. Sonny Tobing

Dr. Sonny Lumban Tobing (Indonesia) passed away at the age of 62 years on 4 July 2007 in Jakarta, having suffered a stroke. The untimely and unexpected end took away a man everybody used to like: a quiet, always smiling, devoted, generous and gentle person. Dr. Tobing served the sport of weightlifting for decades; i.a. as Member of the IWF Medical Committee 1994-2000, doctor on duty in Olympic Games, World and Asian Championships, etc. He was also a first-class international referee, jury member and technical controller.
