IWF gives urgent help to Haitian weightlifters

Since the devastating earthquake and subsequent human catastrophy in Haiti, the IWF President Dr. Tamás Aján and the IWF office have been in touch permanently with the President of the Weightlifting Federation of Haiti. According to information received from Mr. Gerard Fong, the lives of Haiti's weightlifters were fortunately spared, however, they lost their homes and means of existence. Therefore, following the initiative of the IWF President, the IWF is furnishing prompt assistance to Haitian Weightlifting: first a lump sum of 5,000 USD - through the neighbouring Dominican Federation - to help the athletes to means of livelihood, to be followed later by material help in the value of another 5,000 USD.

Hamidul Islam wrote his name in golden letters

Veteran lifter Hamidul Islam wrote his name in golden letters in the history of the country's weightlifting clinching the first gold medal for Bangladesh in the 11th SA Games in the 77 Kg weight category. This was the first international gold for Bangladesh in weightlifting since the emergence of independent Bangladesh.He lifted 117 kgs in snatch and 140 kgs in clean & jerk. Hamidul was ecstatic after the feat. ‘I don't have the words to explain the feelings, It is like a dream come true after a long time, I have been trying to win the Gold for the country not for me, I am happy that I have achieved the feat' said Hamidul. Hamidul however saw another point behind his success. ‘I was really driven by the gesture of the Prime Minister when she called us at her residence, her request was admirable and I got really motivated by the occasion, I pledged to myself that this time I have to win the Gold, and at last I did it' said the ace weightlifter. Hamidul was thankful to the Bangladesh Olympic Association also. ‘They arranged the long term training and it proved worthy, I hope the trend would continue' said Hamidul. India lift gold, bronze in the South Asian Games

After making a last-minute entry into the South Asian Games in Dhaka - due to sanctions imposed by the International Weightlifting Federation - Omkar Otari and Rustam Sarang proved they weren't there just to make up the numbers. In the 62-kg category, Otari won the gold while Sarang brought home the bronze medal at the National Sport Gymnasium in Dhaka on Sunday. Pakistan's Mohammad Istiaq Ghafoor claimed the silver medal. A proud Sahdev Yadav, who is secretary-general of the IWF, said this was just the beginning and his squad would win in all categories they take part in. "It's a welcome relief.
