2015 IWF World Championships Wins SportsTravel Award

International Weightlifting Federation, Harris County-Houston Sports Authority, USA Weightlifting win SportsTravel Award  Atlantic City, NJ – September 27, 2016 SportsTravel Magazine awarded the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), Harris County-Houston Sports Authority (HCHSA) and USA Weightlifting (USAW) the 2016 SportsTravel Best Amateur Single-Sport Event of the Year Award for the 2015 IWF World Championships in Houston, Texas. 585 athletes from 94 countries descended on George R. Brown Convention Center November 19-28 to participate in the year’s premiere weightlifting competition. “It is such an honor to win this award,” HCHSA CEO and Janis Burke said. “Houston welcomed the world and I am so proud that our community was recognized for its hospitality.” “Organizing and hosting an event of this magnitude is never easy,” USAW CEO Phil Andrews said. “We were lucky to have great partners at the International Weightlifting Federation and the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority who were all instrumental in making this event such a success.” The SportsTravel Award honored the 2015 IWF Championships for its superior organization and spectator attendance, for creating superior experience for competitors and spectators. The award also recognized Houston for enhancing an already star-studded sports event. “This award shows something that we all know about Houston. It’s a great place to live, visit and to hold major sporting events,” Burke said. The SportsTravel Award, voted on by SportsTravel Magazine readers, was presented to HCHSA CEO Janis Burke and USAW CEO Phil Andrews at an awards gala at the TEAMS ’16 conference in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Tuesday evening. Executive Board finished 2 days of meetings in Beijing

In the past 2 days, the IWF Executive Board has completed a highly productive meeting in Beijing, China. Ahead of its Congress in a month’s time where the IWF Constitution and By-Laws and the Technical and Competition Rules and Regulations will be updated by the delegates for 2017 and onwards, the Board has gone through the document extensively in order to make recommendations on each article and point to the Congress delegates in Penang. Among the technical rule modifications now approved by the Board, there are two of historic significance: Reaching gender parity in the sport, women will also have 8 bodyweight categories (just like men) as of 1 January 2017. The new categories are: 90kg and +90kg for senior and junior; and 75kg and +75kg for the youth competitors. Another epic change may be the abolishment of the bodyweight advantage (in the case of equal results) which is expected to make weightlifting competitions easier to understand and increase the competitiveness.
