IWF Executive Board meets virtually to discuss key matters

The new International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Executive Board (EB) met virtually to discuss a number of pressing matters that will support the continued development of the federation.  The upcoming IWF Athletes’ Commission (AC) election was discussed as Commission Chair Forrester Christopher Osei presented the changes the AC has made to the candidature forms for election, which will be distributed in September.The election will take place during the IWF World Championships in Bogota on 5-16 December 2022. The EB unanimously elected EB Member and British Weightlifting Federation CEO/General Secretary Matthew Curtain as the IF Delegate for the Olympic Games Paris 2024. Fellow EB Member, Sam Coffa, was appointed as the Technical Delegate for the Victoria 2026 Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth Weightlifting Federation and Oceania Weightlifting Federation General Secretary Paul Coffa was appointed as the Technical Delegate for the 2023 Pacific Games in Honiara, Solomon Islands. Updates were also provided on the federation’s TV/Digital production and media rights distribution. The EB heard presentations from interested external parties and agreed to a three-day extension to allow for further discussion before taking a final decision.   The EB approved the creation of three new Commissions: Weightlifting Sport and Innovation Commission Membership Commission Public Relations and Communications Commission The composition and terms of reference for the Commissions will be announced in due course. In collaboration with the European Weightlifting Federation, the EB agreed to provide financial assistance to Ukrainian weightlifters who are currently training in Romania. The EB acknowledged the Romanian Weightlifting Federation for the support they have provided to date.  The EB also approved ZhangKong Company (ZKC) as its official supplier for the Olympic Games Paris 2024. The next EB meeting will take place in person in Rome on 3 October

IWF – ITA meeting – August 23, 2022

On 23 August 2022 the new IWF leadership had its first official meeting with Mr Benjamin Cohen, Director General of the International Testing Agency (ITA) to discuss the future plan aimed at protecting clean athletes and promoting clean sport.   On the meeting the IWF was represented by Mr Mohammed Jalood, IWF President, Mr Antonio Urso, IWF General Secretary, Mrs Ursula Papandrea Garza, IWF First Vice President and Mr Rune Andersen, IWF Anti-Doping Commission Chairman.   Among the topics discussed were the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Testing  (In- and Out-of-Competition), and the Importance of Investing in Intelligence and Education.   ITA, in cooperation with the IWF Anti-Doping Commission will propose to the Executive Board future proposals on how the current Anti-Doping program could be revolutionazed which the Board will discuss on 3rd October in Rome at their next in-person meeting.  

Full support for the World Championships in Colombia

25th August 2022, Pan American Weightlifting Federation President, Mr. José Quiñones together with Colombian Weightlifting Federation President, Mr. William Peña met in Bogota, Colombia with Ms. Maria Isabel Urrutia, Minister of Sports of Colombia, Olympic Champion in weightlifting in Sydney, in 2000. During the meeting, IWF President, Mr. Mohammed Jalood joined virtually and expressed his confidence in Bogota, Colombia for the upcoming IWF World Championships in December 2022 which will be the first qualification event for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. IWF Seeks TV/Digital Production and Media Rights Distribution Partner for Selected Paris 2024 Qualification Events

IWF is pleased to open a bidding process to appoint a TV/Digital production and/or media right distribution partner for selected Paris 2024 Weightlifting Qualification Events between 2022-2024. Details of the bidding process can be found here. Selected events include 2022 & 2023 IWF World Championships and the 2024 IWF World Cup. The tender includes the option of additional events including two IWF Grand Prix (2023 Q2-Q3 & Q3-Q4) which will be both qualification events for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.Bidders are asked to submit their tender(s) by August 29, 2022. Weightlifting raises the bar at Islamic Solidarity Games

Weightlifting returned to the forefront at the Islamic Solidarity Games Konya 2021 as five days of thrilling competition saw numerous records broken and countless excellent performances. World-class athletes, including World and Olympic champions, from 24 countries competed in the five-day competition. A total of 89 lifters from 21 nations took part in the men’s events and 59 athletes from 17 nations competed in the women’s competitions. Athletes from 11 countries won medals at the event, including World and Olympic Champion Ruslan Nurudinov from Uzbekistan who lifted 417kg and set three Games records in the men’s 109kg category. His compatriot, World and Olympic Champion Akbar Djuraev moved up to +109kg and won gold, lifting 446kg. 2020 Asian Championships silver medallist, Gulnabat Kadyrova from Turkmenistan set a new Games Record in Snatch and Total with 225kg in the women’s 71kg. 2021 World Championships silver medallist Sarvarbek Zafarjonov from Uzbekistan won gold with 366kg, breaking all three Games records in the men’s 89kg. Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Bronze medallist, Zulfiya Chinshanlo from Kazakhstan won the gold medal in the women’s 59kg with 220kg. In the men’s 102kg category, 2021 World Champion Rasoul Motamedi Sedeh from the Islamic Republic of Iran won gold, lifting 400kg and setting three new Games records. IWF President Mohammed Jalood said: “The Islamic Solidarity Games attracted some of the world’s best athletes and this was reflected in the extremely high quality of the competitions.
