Russian Weightlifting Olympic Champion Dies

Russian weightlifting Olympic champion Arkady Vorobiev has died at the age of 88. "On December 22, the outstanding athlete and scientist, two-time Olympic champion Arkady Vorobiev died at the age of 88," the federation said in a statement published on its website. Vorobiev won the gold medal at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne and the 1960 Olympics in Rome in the under-90kg division. He then became a doctor of medicine and wrote several books on weightlifting, local media reported. He served in the marine infantry during the Second World War and was awarded with a Medal for Courage before starting his sports career. The veteran became a five-time world and European champion, two-time Olympic champion in his extraordinary life. He entered the International Weightlifting Federation Hall of Fame in 1995. The Russian Weightlifting Federation expressed its "deepest condolences" to the family and relatives of Vorobiev, said the statement. Born in 1924, Vorobiev was the Olympic Bronze medalist in 1952 (82.5kg category), then won Gold medals in 1956 and 1960 (both in the 90kg category). He was Silver medalist at the World Championships in 1950 (82.5 category) then won the title of World Champion in 1953 in the 82.5kg category, then repeated in the 90kg category in 1954, 1955, 1957, and 1958. In 1959 he won the 90kg category Silver medal, and ended his international career by winning the Bronze medal in 1961. Vorobiev set a total of 16 World records in his career. Malaysian Weightlifting Federation Elections

Dato Ong Poh Eng was elected president of the Malaysian Weightlifting Federation (MWF) at the MWF annual general meeting (AGM) Saturday 29 December. Also IWF Executive Board Member, he organized the 2010 IWF Continental Clubs Grand Prix, Commonwealth Championships and the 2011 Junior World Championships in Penang, Malaysia. Ong, who is also Penang Amateur Weightlifting Association president, defeated former president Zafarul Akhbar Kassim by securing 45 out of 65 votes. British Weightlifting celebrate funding increase

It is full speed ahead for British Weight Lifting’s plans for the next four years, after both UK Sport and Sport England agreed to increased levels of funding for 2013-17. UK Sport today announced an overall increase in funding for the governing body of 7.5 per cent, with their total figure for Olympic weightlifting and Paralympic powerlifting being £2,639,433. And on Monday Sport England gave a major boost to weightlifting at grassroots level when they agreed to give British Weight Lifting £1 million for the same period of time. Fiona Lothian, Performance Manager for British Weight Lifting, said: “We are delighted that, having gone through the London 2012 funding cycle with weightlifting as a basic funded sport, the progression and improvements made by our athletes and coaches has been recognised by UK Sport. “The award of core funding plus the addition of a number of athlete personal awards for the Rio cycle is a great boost and shows we are now on the right track. Likewise in Paralympic powerlifting we have five athletes who have been acknowledged as having the potential to medal in Rio 2016. “There is also support for talent identification and coach development across both weightlifting and Paralympic powerlifting which will enable British Weight Lifting to continue to progress towards its performance targets in 2016 and beyond.” UK Sport funds elite performance across both Olympic and Paralympic Sports. They have given weightlifting £1,798,319 for the Rio Olympic cycle, while Paralympic powerlifting has been awarded £841,114. 2014 Youth Olympic Games Nanjing

Mr. Attila Adamfi, IWF Competition Director recently paid a visit to Nanjing, China in order to proceed to the Technical Visit in preparation of the Youth Olympic Games Nanjing 2014. He was received by the Nanjing 2014 Team and the appointed Competition Manager, Mr. Li Hao. The venue to host Weightlifting competitions will be the Nanjing International Expo Center (NIEC) completed in 2008. The competition venue will also accommodate the weightlifting training providing easy and comfortable solution for athletes and team officials. Fencing, Taekwondo, Boxing and Modern Pentathlon/fencing competitions will also take place at the NIEC. The competition venue has a perfect location, in between the Athletes Village and the Olympic Stadium. The draft Competition Schedule was approved. According to the provisional schedule, the Weightlifting event will kick off on 17 August 2014 – right after the Opening Ceremony of the Youth Olympic Games Nanjing 2014.
