Day 2 – First World Record of the 2022 IWF Junior World Championships

The program of the second day featured the Women 55kg (A and B Group) and the Men 61kg (A and B Group) categories.

Women 55kg Category

The Women 55kg Group B started the day at 11:00 local time, where the best result was achieved by Tenishia THORNTON (MLT) with 180 in Total.

The Women 55kg A Group was the third competition of the day with 11 athletes competiting for the World Championships titles. Among the athletes were Nina STERCKX, Tokyo 2020 Olympian in W49kg category and Svitlana SAMULIAK (UKR) 2021 IWF World Championships Bronze medalist.

In the Snatch portion of the program Nina STERCKX didn’t give a chance to anyone when she went 88-90-93 and won Gold medal. It was an extraordinary accomplishement as this Gold medal was the first Junior World Champion title for Belgium in weightlifting. Second place went to Svitlana SAMULIAK (UKR) who lifted 89kg on her last lift. This was only 2 kgs less than what she lifted at last years World Championships in Tashkent. The Snatch podium was completed by Jamila PANFILOVA (UZB) who lifted 86kg on her last attempt.

In Clean&Jerk Juliana KLARISA won Bronze with 103kg (1st attempt). While she tried to lift 105kg and 107kg on her second and third attempts, she wasn’t successful in any of them. Second place went to Leila COOK (USA) who at her first International competition already won a Silver medal with 106kg. After her win in Snatch, Nina STERCKX continued to amaze everyone. With her first attempt of 107kg she already won both C&J and Total in the category. She then lifted 111kg and tried 114kg on her last attempt but it was a no lift.

In Total, the Snatch podium was repeated: Nina STERCKX (BEL) won with 204kg, Silver was won by Svitlana SAMULIAK (UKR) with 192kg and Jamila PANFILOVA (UZB) finished third with 186kg.

Men 61kg Category

At the last competition of the day the Men 61kg category saw all the Youth World Record holders, Hampton Morris (USA) and Kaan KAHRIMAN (TUR). 

In Snatch, Solis DANIEL STIVEN CAICEDO (COL) won his first Bronze medal at his first international competition with 121kg. Silver went to Sergio Massidda (ITA), 2021 IWF Junior World Champion with 125kg and the winner of the category was Kaan KAHRIMAN (TUR) with 126kg. Sadly Sergio after his last Snatch injured himself, therefore he withdraw from the competition.

In Clean&Jerk we witnessed the first World Record of the 2022 IWF Junior World Championships by Hampton Morris (USA). He went 3 from 3 with 150-154 and with 160 he broke the Junior World Record of 159 by 1 kg. Solis DANIEL STIVEN CAICEDO (COL) placed 2nd with 146kg, while Minjae CHOI (KOR) – from Group B – won Bronze with 145kg.

The Total podium was as follows: Hampton won Gold with 276kg, Silver went to Kaan KAHRIMAN with 269kg, while Solis finished the podium with 267kg.

Tomorrow the program will start with the Men 67kg Group B at 10:00 local time.
