IWF Technical Visit in Anaheim

The International Weightlifting Federation delegation traveled to Anaheim, California this week to meet with the Organizing Committee planning this year’s IWF World Championships.

Led by Director General Attila Adamfi, the IWF delegation toured the competition venue, the Anaheim Convention Center. The IWF also visited hotels that will serve as home for hundreds of athletes, coaches and technical officials for the competition, scheduled November 28-December 6, 2017.

The Organizing Committee shared its creative vision for the event with Adamfi and IWF Director of Communication and Marketing Lilla Rozgonyi during the three days of meetings in Anaheim. During that time the IWF delegation met with the United States Olympic Committee which expressed its support for the World Championships in Anaheim. The question related to VISA and entry to the USA was also raised and is kept under major focus.

The Organizing Committee and the IWF also walked through plans for the competition space, IWF Executive Board and Congress meeting venues and marketing plans. All sites are in walking distance. Other topics discussed included event ticketing, accreditation and spectator meal options.

Creating a unique and memorable experience for athletes, coaches and spectators is a major focus. The Organizing Committee and the IWF delegation toured potential sites for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and discussed ways to create the most memorable World Championships yet.

USA Weightlifting Senior Events Manager Pedro Meloni, Director of Membership, Communications and Digital Marketing Kevin Farley and Andrews met with their California counterparts to iron out details for the event. Roy Edmonson, Visit Anaheim’s Vice President of Sports Development and Rip Hunter, CEO of Get Travel, along with the rest of the Organizing Committee, discussed athlete registration and other important procedures with the IWF that will be published in the coming weeks.

As preparations continue, tickets and spectator hotel package are already on sale for the event at 2017wwcAnaheim.com.

“We had great meetings with the IWF here in Anaheim,” USA Weightlifting CEO Phil Andrews said at the conclusion of the site visit Friday. “We look forward to continue finalizing plans with our great partners at Visit Anaheim and the IWF. We cannot wait to welcome the world back to the United States.”
