2015 IWF World Championships Wins SportsTravel Award

International Weightlifting Federation, Harris County-Houston Sports Authority, USA Weightlifting win SportsTravel Award 

Atlantic City, NJ – September 27, 2016

SportsTravel Magazine awarded the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), Harris County-Houston Sports Authority (HCHSA) and USA Weightlifting (USAW) the 2016 SportsTravel Best Amateur Single-Sport Event of the Year Award for the 2015 IWF World Championships in Houston, Texas.

585 athletes from 94 countries descended on George R. Brown Convention Center November 19-28 to participate in the year’s premiere weightlifting competition.

“It is such an honor to win this award,” HCHSA CEO and Janis Burke said. “Houston welcomed the world and I am so proud that our community was recognized for its hospitality.”

“Organizing and hosting an event of this magnitude is never easy,” USAW CEO Phil Andrews said. “We were lucky to have great partners at the International Weightlifting Federation and the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority who were all instrumental in making this event such a success.”

The SportsTravel Award honored the 2015 IWF Championships for its superior organization and spectator attendance, for creating superior experience for competitors and spectators. The award also recognized Houston for enhancing an already star-studded sports event.

“This award shows something that we all know about Houston. It’s a great place to live, visit and to hold major sporting events,” Burke said.

The SportsTravel Award, voted on by SportsTravel Magazine readers, was presented to HCHSA CEO Janis Burke and USAW CEO Phil Andrews at an awards gala at the
TEAMS ’16 conference in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Tuesday evening.

Previous winners include the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, the Boston Marathon and the Ryder Cup.
