Lima will host the 130th International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session in 2017 after defeating Helsinki in an election in Monaco. The Peruvian capital won comfortably with 54 votes, against 30 for its Finnish rival. It will be the third IOC Session on South American soil in five years following the 2013 event in Buenos Aires and the 2016 edition due to be held in Rio de Janeiro on the eve of the Olympics i the Brazilian city. In a 15-minute presentation this morning, during which IOC member Iván Dibós and Peruvian Olympic Committee President José Quiñones González, each spoke, the growing strength of the nation as a major events venue was outlined. It follows the decision last year to award Peru the 2019 Pan American Games. The Session will be held in the summer of 2017, although a specific date is yet to be revealed. But it will be particularly significant because a decision is due to be made there as to which city hosts the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics.
