Successful completion for the inaugural Clubs Grand Prix

India bagged the highest number of gold medals at the inaugural IWF Continental Clubs Grand Prix and Junior Commonwealth Championships at the Penang International Sports Arena within women. The Social Health Club (IND) won the Prize Money of 5,000 $ with an outstanding performance ending up first in Team Classification right before Penang Club (MAS) and MSN (MAS) who took third place.

In men’s competition, the 5,000 $ Prize Money was awarded to the Services Sport Club (IND) who won the Team Classification while second place went to Universal (IND). The Nauruan club Marcus managed to grab third place.

All 5 continents were represented in Penang, either with athletes or officials.

According to the statements of Madame Yang Berhmormat Lydia Ong Kok Fooi, State Minister for Penang Youth and Sports during the successful closing banquet:

“Hosting the inaugural IWF Continental Clubs Grand Prix in Penang has increased Malaysia’s involvement in sport life and improved its great commitment to weightlifting sport! The determination to build a new competition venue gives us great hope in organizing even Senior World Championships in the close future!”

The conditions and assistance ensured by the Organizing Committee surpassed expectations. The competition managed under the leadership of Mr Ong Poh Eng, IWF Executive Board Member and operated with the special contribution of Mr. Paul Coffa, Oceania and Commonwealth Federations’ General Secretary as well as IWF staff was a great success.
